U10s 3 – Holy Trinity Jedi 0

Westwood Park today demonstrated just how much they have progressed individually and as a team. Playing a team they narrowly & possibly fortuitously beat at the start of the season, they ran out comfortable winners. Indeed the margin could have been even greater.

Playing on yet another bitterly cold day (why are all pitches just so exposed?!) Westwood won the toss and elected to play uphill & into the wind. Joe demonstrated that he wasn’t feeling the temperature after just 10 seconds. He pulled off a fine reflex save to prevent what would have been a very unfortunate own goal.

Having survived this scare, Westwood settled into the game and we saw several players having their best game for some time, if not the season. David has come on terrifically and is adding to his terrier-like tackling some great distribution of the ball. Meanwhile Magnus delivered his normal stout & athletic defence but he too also showed he can pass and not just run with the ball. On reflection, one of the keys to such a fantastic 100% league record has been the solidity of the back three with Joe, Magnus & Rohan appearing impregnable.

Back at his imperious best today was Joseph. He dominated the midfield and the first of the team’s three goals game when, after 12 minutes, he picked the ball up in his own half and despite the manager’s call to look for a pass, dribbled through the whole of the opposition including the keeper. 1-0 to Westwood Park.

Joseph ran the game and at times combined well with Euan. As ever, Tom also worked incredibly hard but today the ball just wouldn’t quite run for him. It didn’t help that he was contained by the unusual but possibly innovative new formation of 3-3 adopted by Holy Trinity. Such was the assertiveness of Westwood today however – no complacency at all – their opponents were restricted to just a few long range shots downwind & downhill. Joe was always comfortably in control of the goal and there was little threat.

Halftime came and went. The sun arrived to ease the chill just a little but the pressure on Holy Trinity did not cease. Four minutes into the second half after further good work from Tom, Joseph picked up the ball and slotted home. 2-0 to Westwood Park.

The general trend of the game continued with Oli, who is looking more confident and part of the team every week, winning the ball and slotting a lovely left-foot pass to George. With his back to his marker, George cleverly flicked it pass him, ran on to it and fed Joseph. The rest was predictable as our very own JT completed the hat-trick his performance merited.

By now the opposition were deflated and Westwood passed the ball around with some ease. Further attacks occurred, with Isaiah in particular looking dangerous, but no further goals came. The match finished almost inevitably with Joseph on the ball and Westwood remain not just unbeaten in the league but with a 100% record and one tough game to come.

As you will sense, it was yet another pleasing morning watching the boys.
