The headline is true, the U10s started the new season – playing their first ever league game – and drew 0-0 with Holy Trinity Hawks in a thrilling match in the sunshine at Westwood Park.

The greens played their hearts out and with a bit more luck and composure in front of goal could have won by 4 or 5 goals. The Hawks were a big, strong side who defended very well but they were made to for most of the match by some fantastic movement and passing from our side.

The opposition goalkeeper was often under siege and on two or three occasions managed to scramble the ball to safety when surrounded by at least three WPFC players – not good for a coaches stress levels…….

Jordan Jones was hardly troubled in goal and his action was mainly confined to goal kicks with just one moment of anguish when the ball went through his legs but out for a corner.

The defence was very solid with fierce tackling captain Ethan Hall and Toby Dover looking so composed on the ball. The midfield ran and ran with Guy Baverstock creating some great chances from the right (and scoring our goal in the friendly afterwards) Joshua Bailey was an absolute legend in the middle of midfield getting up to support Aaron Browne up front and helping out his defence constantly.

Adam Forster was as always excellent on the ball and made some fantastic passes to Aaron up front and came closest to scoring when hitting the post near the end. Aaron B was so strong up front, playing the target man and constantly pressuring the opposition defenders – so much so that after a bit of ‘handbags’ at one point the opposition centre-half decided enough was enough and ran off to hide in the bushes!!

Bill Hodgson, Luois Baffoe and Aaron Lee formed the midfield in the friendly and played excellently, showing that our squad has developed really well and this performance augers well for a great season ahead. Thanks also to Tom ‘Jack Taylor’ Browne for an excellent performance as the ‘man in black’ and thanks to the parents for their support and for their help with the goals – I am sure they were easier to put up last season…………
