The Under 11 Green and Blacks belatedly started the season with an away match. However rather than a keenly contested rematch with the competitive, yet direct, St Mary’s Bulldogs, the boys faced the second of the two St James’ teams, the Swifts. In contrast to the corresponding fixture last year (when the boys shivered their way to a 5-0 win), it was a beautiful morning in Beaconsfield and much of the boy’s football matched the weather!

The “Invincibles” from last season, strengthened by a number of exciting new recruits, started their first eleven-a-side season by despatching the Swifts in impressive fashion. Two hat-tricks, the first by Tom and the second from Magnus, were complemented by a brace from Joseph and two unfortunate own goals, though both of these were created by persistent pressure from our boys.

A busy first half ended with Westwood Park three goals to the good. After the first own goal started the rout, Tom became the first Green and Black on the score sheet with a calm finish after a great turn and pass from Rees. The rest of the half continued in the same vein, with persistent Westwood Park pressure (matched by a determined “Park-the-Bus” defence), punctuated by occasional long balls over the midfield from the opposition. Despite long periods of inactivity, Joe showed good concentration with a number of saves and clean catches from these infrequent forays into our half. As the end of the first half approached, we had a goal disallowed for offside, before Joseph finally got the third goal that our pressure deserved, finishing with aplomb after determined approach work from Tom.

Despite a bright start to the second half it was our opponents that were first on the score sheet after six minutes but there was to be no great comeback from the Swifts. Tom quickly restored a three goal advantage with a left foot shot drilled past the Keeper’s right, followed by his hat-trick goal 12 mins into the half when the goalie failed to hold a powerful and direct shot. This was the platform for a second-half goal fest that saw a superb hat-trick from Magnus (including a Steven Gerrard-like solo run and strike), another poacher’s finish from Joseph and a further own goal, with a single Swifts reply proving little consolidation for our opponents who had a very difficult morning.

Overall a very encouraging start to the new season, with the boys showing what they can do when their confidence is up and their passing game gets going. With a squad of 14 players, every boy got their turn on the field and all made telling contributions. While it would be unfair to a great team performance to dwell too much on individuals, we should mention very encouraging Church league debuts from Ben (who was unlucky not to score at least one goal), Sam, Henry, Rees and Oliver and great marshalling of the defence from the very vocal Rohan. Well done boys, keep it up!
