Football commentators frequently say that it is the Cup matches where you get the unusual games and unusual scores. Saturday’s result of a 7-0 loss against Holy Trinity Jedi was one such game. The Jedis played well and deserved their win but even the home side’s mums and dads agreed that the score did not do our boys justice. If we had the technology to measure the games possession, it would probably have shown a statistic of around 50/50. For the mums and dads watching, there was certainly an hour’s worth of end to end football. We knew that the Jedis were going to be tough opposition as they are currently top of the League.

The match started at a quick pace with westwood showing good early pressure on the Jedis’ goal. Two attacks and a shot on goal threatened to open the scoring. A well taken short corner at 5 minutes culminated in another attack on the Jedi goal but the final shot or pass always seemed to break down just at the point where we were looking threatening. At the other end of the pitch we were defending well. Particularly Magnus who was covering both sides of the pitch extremely well and getting the measure of the Jedis’ large centre forward.

With 8 minutes gone a break away by the Jedi towards the westwood goal culminated in a shot over the bar. Following that Westwood had two further strong attacks on the goal with Ed up front trying a shot from the edge of the box.

Five minutes later we had a further corner and only good defending by Jedi thwarted us for an early goal. A very encouraging start to the match was stopped in its tracks when Westwood were awarded a penalty for a challenge just inside the penalty box. The spot kick was hit low and to the left of Joe.

Against the first 20 minutes run of play, Westwood were 1-0 down but with every expectation of getting the ball back up the other end to score. Euan played some particularly good balls up the right hand side of the pitch allowing a number of attacks on the Jedi goal. Helping out in defence was Edward Murphy, his first game for Westwood Park and certainly making a difference with his solid left foot.

A loose ball in the box at 18 minutes resulted in goal No. 2 for Jedi.

Then on 24 minutes a decent cross into the box by the Jedis resulted in goal No. 3, a minute later a long shot from the home side required an excellent save by Joe diving low to his right. We continued to attack the Jedi goal but they defended in numbers and it was hard to get that final shot on target.

Goal No. 4 came at 28 minutes just before half time and was again the successful combination of a long cross into the penalty box finding the foot of a Jedi.

The boys realised that they should not be 4 goals down at this stage and carried on attacking the opposition’s goal. Ed tried two shots at goal but both were saved and cleared efficiently. A minute before half time a further attack on our goal required Joe to save well at his near post. At half time the boys grouped around Paul and Sandy to hear wise words.

Hopefully the added slope in the second half would help the attacks on goal. Yet again the second half started with end to end football. Henry and Ben particularly defending well for Westwood Park . Two further attacks on the Jedi goal in the first five minutes still did not trouble the score board. Magnus even hit a shot from inside the centre circle which was on target but was well saved by the Jedi goal keeper. 9 minutes into the second half the Jedis notched up their fifth goal and five minutes later goal No. 6, again across into the box that was tapped into the back of the net. A minute later a further attack hit Joe’s cross bar and rebounded back onto the pitch and a subsequent breakaway by one of the Jedi forwards scored goal No. 7.

Still determined to get on the score board, Rohan made an excellent run down the middle of the pitch and shot well only to have it blocked by one of Jedi. A minute later Arun shot just wide of the right hand post. The boys continued to think about their football and with only a few minutes remaining played the Westwood attackers offside with an excellent offside play.

It was a disappointing result and surprising that Westwood Park did not get on the score board. The entire team battled well right to the last minute and even at the end of the match continued to try and pass the ball rather than just “hoof” it up the other end hoping to score that one off goal.

The match was enjoyable to watch and was excellently played with good use of the full width of the pitch. We take onthe Jedi again this weekend in the league and hopefully we can turn the tables on them and show that we are worthy opponents who can play strong attacking football.

The squad of 13 all gave excellent commitment on the day. The result did not do us Justice!
