On a bright but very cold day, this result saw the under – 9’s continue their unbeaten run for the season and go top of their league. Against a very much improved St James Lions team this match could have gone either way.

Westwood started the match rather sluggishly – to reiterate it was cold, as those on the touchline can attest to! In an even first half, and in spite of some strong bursts through the middle from James, only one opportunity was created by Westwood which saw Jonny shoot wide after good build up work from Daniel and Toby. Matthew in goal at the other end, while inactive for most of the first half, a testament to Mahdi, making his first start of the season and Oliver combining well at the back to keep out the Lions, made an outstanding save, when the ball looked to be heading for the top right hand corner of the net, to keep the teams level at half time.

The second half saw Westwood playing up the slope into a strong wind. Toby’s tenacious tackling in midfield and Mahdi and Oliver’s continued measured distribution out of defence, kept the Lions, who were beginning to gain in confidence at bay. Westwood finally made the breakthrough with some good interplay from all the team that enabled Matthew to create some space and shoot past the Lion’s goalkeeper with his trusted left foot.

The Lions continued to press forward and they were rewarded for their persistence with an equaliser after a protracted scramble in the Westwood goalmouth. Credit to the boys, their heads did not drop, and the team began to show signs of their old confidence, and their passing rhythm resurfaced. This resulted in the move of the match that saw Jonny after some good passing out of defence from Mahdi, make a strong run down the right wing, cut inside his opposite number and score what proved to be the winner with a great shot from just outside the box.
