This saw the Westwood U-9s meet the only other unbeaten team in the league to date and honours shared somewhat fortuitously for Westwood. This on a bright but cold day was a bit like watching Bolton play Blackburn – apologies to any of their supporters – rugged and determined play from both sets of players but hardly one to set the pulse’s racing!

Playing down the slope in the first half, the Buffalos soon settled into a rhythm, they were much quicker to the ball and tackle, and with Westwood playing too deeply Toby’s goal was soon under siege. Jonny and Daniel C along with Matthew and Daniel R worked well as a unit in stemming the Buffalos tide, trying hard to find their own passing rhythm but to no avail. James and Sam were also forced to track back, and this prevented Westwood gaining any continuity in their play. Westwood had one shot to show for their efforts in the half, with Matthew hitting the post after intercepting a goal clearance from the Buffalos keeper. The Buffalos continued to press and were finally rewarded with a well worked goal.

Thank goodness for the half time whistle. A pep talk from David appeared to do the trick. Westwood upped the pace, began to win the ball, with strong tackling from James, Matthew and both Daniels – that earned both Daniel R and Matthew a lecture from the referee. Some neat Interchanges produced a number of opportunities for Sam, Daniel R and Matthew that somehow were not converted – was it going to be one of those days. The Buffalos responded strongly and only a couple of last gasp saves from Jonny in goal prevented them from adding to their tally. Finally the equaliser came with Sam and Matthew combining well to set up the chance for Daniel R to scramble the ball past the Buffalos goalkeeper.

Both sides pressed for a winner, both had opportunities but were unable to convert them. Westwood appeared to finish the match as the stronger of the two sides and for the final minutes of the match were camped in the Buffalos half.

In the end a fair result for both hard working sides. The return fixture could be Interesting.

Reviewer’s man of the match: Daniel Collier for a good all round performance against strong opposition.
