Away Match: 13th March 2010. (Played at WestwoodPark)

Referee: Luke Jeffrey’s.

WPFC Squad: Oliver Anderson, Hugo Eaton Hart (GK 1st Half), Samuel Henderson, Sam Jeffrey’s (GK 2nd Half), Mahdi Karim, Shaylin Patel, James Tunney.

Match Result: Westwood Park 2 – St James Lions 2

Scorers: James Tunney 2

With the Coaches policy of squad rotation, this saw five changes to the team that drew last week against the St James’ Buffalos and what a good performance from the whole side.

The Lions opened the match very confidently and had the Westwood defence under pressure from the start. James marshaled his defence well with Samuel, Shaylin and Oliver putting in some strong tackles to prevent the Lions scoring. Hugo in goal made some fine saves but was eventually beaten by a great strike from the Lion’s centre forward.

Westwood’s head’s did not drop and with Mahdi beginning to find his feet both he and James combined well to set Sam off down the right. Sam’s precise pass into the box was clinically put in to the back of the net by James – Torres eat your heart out! The boys began to gain in confidence and shortly after the first goal James bulldozed his way past four of the Lion’s players to put a strong shot past the Lion’s goalkeeper.

The second half was end to end with both sides having chances. Hugo saw a cracking shot come back off the post and a couple of other chances put wide. The Lions continued to look menacing and Sam in goal made some fine saves to keep them at bay. Samuel came out of his shell and started to take his opposite number on – what a revelation – and very narrowly missed putting Westwood further ahead. However the Lions began to put some passes together and the Westwood midfield disappeared as the match progressed, and finally they scored a deserved equaliser.

A fair result in the end. The Westwood U-9’s remain unbeaten and still lead the league. Well done the boys.

Reviewer’s man of the match: All the team played well. In the words of George post match and without some of the more established players present, “there was nowhere for the boys selected to hide”. They all stuck to the task and achieved a fine result.

However Hugo Eaton Hart for some excellent goal keeping in the first half that kept the team in the game and some great attacking play from him in the second half in which he was very unlucky not to have got on the score sheet is the nominated man of the match for this week. Sam Jeffrey’s also warrants a mention for his goalkeeping in the second half.
