What a match! This Saturday Westwood U11’s took on the league leaders Kings Church Amersham Dynamos. Westwood knew that they had to pull out a great performance because Dynamos were unbeaten this season.

Within five minutes the Dynamos went one up. How would Westwood react?

Almost immediately, some excellent teamwork left Ed running at the goal. The Dynamos showed that they meant business with a spirited tackle and Ed was left on the floor. Shortly afterwards, some great midfield work and Magnus was free of Dynamos’ defence and running into the box. An even more spirited tackle from a seemingly impossible position left Magnus on the floor. The referee waived advantage. Even better than just the two teams taking part – the crowd were really into the spirit too!

What followed was a great exhibition of both teams getting stuck in – neither team gave anything away. Ed hit the upright. Joseph made his height count in the midfield. Then Ed was through on goal again – would this be the equaliser? The ball slammed tantalizingly into the side netting. Dynamos were still one up.

Another break… Ed shot, the goalie parried but Magnus was there to bury the rebound. One each. Game on!

Euan came on for Ben, after a solid performance. Another break. Magnus’ shot was blocked by the Dynamo goalie. A defender looked to clear but Ed put the ball in the net. Two – One!

The crowd were living every moment – as if their legs were forty years fresher. Westwood piled on the pressure, but the Dynamo defence was disciplined. On the counter-attack Oli made a solid interception and saw the ball out for a throw. A Dynamo corner then followed. Oli headed out and Dynamos hit the crossbar. What a game!

Our turn to break. Magnus ran into space. The Dynamo goalie ran out. Magnus played the ball out to Ed who coolly slotted home to the bottom left – a great goal. Three-One to Westwood.

Euan went close. Oli made a great defensive clearance. Dynamos broke and it looked dangerous. Offside…phew! Arun had made his contribution and Rees came on.

The game continued from end to end. Legs started to tire but still they kept running. Every player on the pitch was fully committed. More and more the teams stretched as the Dynamos sought a goal to bring them back into the match. And Ed scores another. Four-One!

Surely the game was in the bag now. But a scramble in the Westwood goal and Dynamos scored from ten yards. Four-Two.

The ball went into the Misbourne again and gave the players – and more importantly the crowd – a well-earned break. When was the final whistle going to blow?

Then a curling Dynamo shot from edge of the box and it was Four-Three. Surely Westwood would not be robbed of their victory?

Joseph made another important header. Dynamos hit the side netting. Rohan and Edward were solid again at the back. The crowd kept looking at their watches.

Another great interception from Rohan. Our throw, Rees just offside on the break. Joe blocked a very solid 30 yard effort. David and Isaiah went on. Joe collected another shot and kicked to the half way line.

Time had to be up soon. However another Dynamo counter-attack produced a shot surely goal-bound, but Joe miraculously edged the ball up onto the crossbar for a corner.

Eliott harried. Oli cleared. Isaiah tackled. The ball was in the Misbourne again. Some great tackling, running, hassling, jostling and a true ‘never say die’ attitude from the whole team right up to the last second. The whistle blew, a roar from the crowd and from the team showed how much it meant to win..

What a superb match. End-to-end with neither team giving an inch. Westwood showed great spirit when they went down to the first goal, and that they could match – and beat – the best team in the league. But this was not so much about the scoreline, more about the boys all playing for each other with a belief in one another. This is what had the crowd on their toes for the whole match. Bring on Brazil!
