On the hottest day of the year so far, the boys looked forward to a hard match against St Joseph ’s Dynamos. Unfortunately due to holidays, coughs, colds and sore throats, Paul only had 11 players to choose for his team of 11! No room for injuries.

The match started well with an early attack by Westwood resulting in an on target shot by Ed but not hard enough to trouble the goal keeper. During the next five minutes the ball was at both ends of the pitch. Good defending by Magnus and Oli Moir halted at least two of the Red’s attacks.

The breakthrough came at the 11th minute with an excellent goal kick by Joe being picked up in mid field and passed onto Joseph who accelerated forward and shot firmly over the keeper’s head into the back of the St Joseph’s net. All was looking good for Westwood Park.

The middle of the first half saw sustained pressure by St Joseph’s on the Westwood goal. During the next 15 minutes there were 7 corners for the Reds and notwithstanding 2 excellent saves by Joe, St Joseph ’s eventually scored the equaliser. The ball was quickly moved down to the St Joseph’s goal area where what seemed like a quality move by the Westwood forwards resulted in a goal that was disallowed due to offside. Immediately the ball was back up the Westwood end and a breakaway goal by the Reds’ forwards resulted in them taking a 2-1 lead. As we moved towards the end of the first half hour, the heat and the “end to end” play was telling as St Joseph’s took more control of the mid field and more attacks on the Westwood goal. A skilful move by the Reds resulted in them hitting the post. Shortly after they went 3-1 up through a well worked close range goal.

The boys went into half time knowing that they needed to hit back with some goals early in the second half. Following Paul’s half time message to the team, the second half started well with a strong run by Ed and a shot well saved by the Reds’ goalkeeper. Within 3 minutes Westwood Park had 3 corners and put excellent pressure on St Joseph’s goal including a shot by Joseph which ended up over the crossbar.

An immediate response by the Reds resulted in their fourth goal and a further break from mid-field provided the fifth goal for St Joseph’s. Continued pressure by the Reds who played some well conceived attacking moves brought their reward with a sixth goal and a seventh came 5 minutes later.

With only a few minutes remaining, Westwood Park still managed two further attacks and good pressure on the St Joseph’s goal but neither resulted in changing the score line which finished 7-1 at the whistle.

Overall a disappointing result but early on in the match there were periods of strong and effective play by Westwood Park. The ball skills and running off the ball by the St Joseph’s forwards outmanoeuvred Westwood’s defence. The opportunity to substitute tired legs in the second half might have helped but for this match it was a convincing win by St Joseph’s.
