Aston Clinton Tournament 4th July

This was our final tournament of the season and we entered 2 teams for the first time. There were 4 other teams in each group, giving us matches against Aston Clinton, Wendover, Thame and Downley.

Pitch 1
Squad; Alex Walker, Arjan, Charles, Charlie, Sam, Jacob and Alfie

Four very good matches in this group, against strong teams. All bar Sam and Charles had a turn in goal. Jacob played in his first tournament and was outstanding in defence. He hardly missed a tackle and when he did Arjan was there at hand to assist. A great double act. Charlie showed some great touches in midfield and was always looking for a pass to a player in space. Sam was full of running and showed great energy at times to cover back when needed.

Charles was outstanding (again). He beats players with ease and also covers tremendous amounts of ground in a 12 minute match. To this he added a couple of clinical finishes as well. Alfie’s close control and drive was key in keeping us pushing back the opposition in most games.

Alex continues to perform well in goal and despite his defensive preferences, nearly scored a hatrick in one game!

All the players were fantastic in playing in positions that they were asked to stay in (unlike some England players!). Throughout the matches passing almost became the norm (with a little bit of encouragement from the coaches). Overall, a great team effort. Everyone was excellent.

Pitch 2
Our first match was against Aston Clinton. Everyone played well and goals were scored by Christian, Charles and Luke (2). Adam made his debut, playing the first half in goal and the second half in midfield, settling in straight away. Joe and Alex Willox were very solid in defence when required, Aaron made plenty of good runs and was unlucky not to score.

Next up were Wendover Juniors (who will be our league next year) and were stiffer opposition. They took the lead with an unstoppable shot before Luke hit back with 2 second half goals. Joe was excellent in defensive midfield, making tackles and moving forward effectively when we attacked. Luke and Christian defended well when required, although Christian was left to do most of the defending as Luke went forward in search of an equaliser. We borrowed Alex Walker from the other squad to allow us to play 7-a-side. He is becoming a fine goalkeeper, was excellent throughout the match and made an absolutely stunning save, diving and holding the ball from a hard shot, right at the end.

We played Thame in our third game; our game coincided with our other team playing so we had to play 6-a-side this time. Another good game, which was much closer than the scoreline would suggest, Christian scored another fine goal, just rewards for his strong running with the ball, to add to Luke’s 3 goals. Thame responded with probably the goal of the match, a rising drive into the top corner leaving Alex Willox in goal with no chance.

Our final game reverted to 7-a-side, with Alex Walker coming in again, this time in defence. Our opposition, Downley Dynamoes will also be in our division next year, and proved to be strong opponents. Luke was in goal first half, playing more like a sweeper as he snuffed out 2 or 3 long balls forward. Joe went in for the second half, making a couple of brave stops and had no chance with the Downley goal. Luke scored again, taking his tally to 8. This was probably our best goal as a fine run by Christian ended with a slipped pass to Aaron, who took the ball on before passing forward to Luke to slide the ball past their goalkeeper. Aaron scored our second, just reward for his unselfish running and passing, and Adam marked his debut with a well-deserved goal from close range just before the end of the match.

Overall, the performances were excellent. The boys have developed really well this year and have improved with every match through the tournament season. We now have 6 or 7 good goalkeepers to share duties; most of the boys now understand about holding their defensive positions when required and taking it in turns to join our attacks. Our passing was effective through midfield and we scored plenty of good goals.

Squad: Luke, Alex Willox, Joe, Adam, Christian, Aaron (unfortunately Archie was ill and couldn’t make it) plus “guest” appearances to allow us to play 7-a-side from Charles and Alex Walker.
