So the start of the Under 8’s campaign kicked off with the Holmer Green Tournament. This was a 6-a-side tournament with 6 matches of 8 minutes in duration. The weather was sunny but cold. Westwood Park entered 2 squads of 8 players.

Pitch 1 – Group; Westwood Park, Wendover Reds, Marlow Youth, Holmer Green, Prestwood Colts, Penn & Tylers Green and Beaconsfield SYCOB Bulls

Squad; Aaron, Charles, Kian, Kaurshal, Arjan, Jacob, Christian and Adam

Westwood Park were placed in a very strong group both physically and skill wise. These were the first matches for the boys after the summer holidays without any training and it showed as the boys took a little while to get going.

The first two games were tough but the boys did their best especially Adam in goal for the first match who made a string of first class saves.

In the third game we played Beaconsfield who played their strongest team, three of whom play for Wycombe Wanderers under 8s. By now we were pulling together as a team what with Kaurshal and Arjan holding off their strikers with some outstanding defending. Jacob and Aaron were making some darting runs trying to get a breakaway goal. Then the goal of the tournament came like a bolt of thunder. A fantastic run and shot from Aaron into the top corner of Beaconsfield’s net!

Kian, Charles and Christian made some great runs all over the park with accurate passes and well timed tackles made.

Overall the boys did well for their first games of the season.

Pitch 2 – Group; Westwood Park, Holmer Green, Widmer End, Haddenham Tigers, Holmer Green, Wendover Blacks, Beaconsfield SYCOB Rams

Squad; Alex W, Joe H, Matthew, Charlie, Sam, Alfie, Rishi and Robert

Again this group was very strong. We certainly have a number of good goalies in this club as only 3 goals were conceded in 6 matches! Rishi and Alex were in particularly good form between the sticks. Helped in no small extent by tough tackling defenders in Robert and Joe.

These tournaments tend to give the opportunity for players to try and out different positions and it was lovely to see everyone adapting to different requests from the coaches. The kids now understand about only 1 defender staying back when we attack.

Goals were at a premium but we managed to get 3 in the end. Great finishes from Sam, Matthew and Charlie!

Despite their rustiness, the overall highlight was the passing. Alfie lead from the front on this. In a couple of the matches the boys passed the opposition off the park. Let’s hope they continue for the rest of the season in this vain!

Well done boys!
