WPFC Squad: Jo Savage, Oli Moir, Arun Vij, Edward Eaton-Hart, Rees Deliege, Ben Hardy, David Thomas, Elliot Smythe, Edward Mundy, Sam Kennion, Sam Sweetman, Magnus Hitchmough, Isiah Gunter.

Match Result: WestwoodPark 3 – Holy Trinity Jedi: 2

Scorers: Magnus Hitchmough 2, Edward Mundy 1.

With the Jedis close in the table, this was an important match for WestwoodPark to win. The pace of the game was quick from the beginning. An encouraging start by WestwoodPark saw Magnus score the opening goal with a shot off the post. Shortly after a missed opportunity to clear from the home penalty area saw the Jedis equal the scoring at 1-1.

Further attacks from the Jedis were defended well, particularly with Jo coming off his line to meet the forwards and excellent running back by Oli Moir. 20 minutes into the game a strong attack by Magnus saw him take on the keeper on a one on one but unfortunately the angle was just too tight for him to score his second goal. A further shot by Magnus a few minutes later was well saved by the keeper. The attacks on the Jedis’ goal continued and 5 minutes before half time Edward Mundy crossed the ball from the left into the goal mouth and Magnus controlled the ball well, did a half turn and an excellent shot took Westwood into the lead (the first time Magnus’s grandparents had seen him play. Please can they come and watch more often!).

A minute later the Jedis were attacking the home goal and only some strong defending from Edward Eaton-Hart and an excellent save from Jo meant that at half time the score remained at 2-1 to Westwood.

The second half started with WestwoodPark playing up the hill and into the wind. Immediately the home team put the pressure on the Jedis and for the next 15 minutes most of the play was in the opposition’s half. However a break from the Jedis saw them lob a shot over Jo but fortune saw it hit the post and it was swiftly cleared by the WestwoodPark defence. Further shots by the WestwoodPark forwards required the opposition goalkeeper to produce some strong saves. WestwoodPark’s goal was also being attacked strongly and only a quick thinking save off the line by Ben and some good defending by Isiah kept the ball out of the home net. With 6 minutes to go the Jedis latched on to a loose ball within the box and a firm shot to the right of Jo took the score to 2-2. Yet the determination of WestwoodPark meant that from the kick off they pushed forward towards the Jedi goal. Edward Mundy took the ball to the goal line and shot into the box (meant to be a cross at his own admission) and notwithstanding the tight angle the ball powered past the Jedi keeper to notch up a 3-2 lead.

With 3 minutes remaining the Jedis had two great opportunities to score but on the day they were not able to capitalise. Westwood remained in front at the final whistle.

Certainly a win that was well deserved by the entire Westwood team.
