Home Match: Saturday 26th March 2011

WPFC Squad: Joseph Tunney, Magnus Hitchmough, Edward Murphy, Ed Mundy, Rohan Montgomery, Isiah Gunter, Arun Vij, Elliot Smythe, Sam Sweetman, Oliver Collier, David Thomas, Joe Savage, David Jewsbury, Rees Deliege.

Match Result: Westwood Park 2, Holy Trinity Jedi 4.

Scorers: Joseph Tunney 1, Ed Mundy 1.

Having suffered a heavy defeat in the Cup semi-final last week, the boys were looking to put in a stronger performance against the Jedi .

Our goalkeeper Joe took on the captaincy for the match and within the first 3 minutes had pulled off 2 superb saves to prevent the Jedi taking an early lead. One was a great parry onto his left post and the second a textbook narrowing of the angle with a ‘one on one’ attack from their centre forward.

Whilst nearly all the early play was in Westwood’s half, a break from the home team’s forwards onto a long ball saw Joseph strike an excellent shot into the roof of the net to open the scoring in the sixth minute, very much against the run of play.

3 minutes later a further attack by Westwood Park resulted in the Jedi goalkeeper fouling Ed Mundy. A penalty was given and Ed placed it wide to the right of the keeper to notch up a 2-0 lead with only 10 minutes played.

During the next few minutes shots by Magnus and Ed came close to troubling the opposition’s goalkeeper but were just off target.

20 minutes into the game an attack by the Jedi saw a goal mouth scramble result in a handball and a penalty for the away team. This was taken well resulting in the Jedi pulling one goal back.

The score remained at 2-1 as the second half began. Excellent pressure by Westwood Park saw further shots on the opposition’s goal. The Jedi countered with a number of break-aways and yet again Joe played excellently in smothering a number of shots on goal. A further attack by the Jedi resulted in them scoring from close range to take the score to an even 2-2. Further attacks on the home goal saw the Jedi score 2 further goals over the next 15 minutes with the final whistle being blown at a disappointing 4-2 win for the Jedi.

This was one of those games where without some excellent saves by Joe, the opposition’s tally would have been a lot higher. At the same time excellent efforts on goal by Westwood’s midfield and forwards could have notched 2 or 3 more goals to the good. The ball was hard to control due to a much harder playing surface following some warmer weather but there were encouraging signs from all the Westwood Park team. Whilst we were beaten on this occasion, the Jedi are certainly a team that we are capable of beating and hopefully will do so during our next outing against them.

Onward and upwards for our next outing this Saturday against St Peters Iver.
