Under 9’s – Holmer Green Tournament (10th September 2011)

Squad; Christopher M, Kian, Alex W, Luke, Sam, Charlie and Milan

So we arrived at our first tournament as an under 9 team on a cold morning. Fortunately, it remained dry. Ahead of us lay a group of 4 tough matches against Gerrards Cross & Fulmer, Ickenham Youth, Samba Pele and Holmer Green. Each match was 7-a-side and 8 minutes long.

We decided to set up as an attacking unit, with some flexibility. Milan and Charlie were briefed on becoming a holding midfielder. Each shared this role throughout the 4 matches and performed the role expertly!

Game 1 was a tight affair against Gerrards Cross. We conceded early from a long range speculative shot that flew over Alex’s head into the top corner. This only served to spur on the boys, who spent most the match camped in their half. Luke produced some dazzling skill and was brought down just inside the penalty area. The resulting penalty was put away by Luke and our efforts had been rewarded. Sam came close at the end with a great volley that the goalie just managed to keep out. The final whistle blew straight after that.

Game 2 was another close game. Our defence went missing early on and gave Ickenham a pretty easy goal. Not long after that Milan landed awkwardly on his ankle and limped off the pitch. Before we could readjust our defence we conceded a second goal. Christopher kept us in the game with some fine stops after that. To their credit, spirits didn’t drop and Alex played a wonderful through ball to Luke who finished from an acute angle.

Game 3 was against Holmer Green the hosts. This was a 6-a-side match with Kian opting to have a rest. This was a game that we totally dominated. Chance after chance occurred, but the ball would not go in the net. Luke and Alex were bossing the midfield and Charlie was in his element with his Xabi Alonso impression as a holding midfielder. In fact, Charlie laid on a great cross for Luke to tuck the ball away at the near post to give us the lead. Holmer Green did have one standout player and he went on a tremendous run, beating 3 defenders and then chipped Christopher in goal. A great equaliser, but such a shame for the boys who really deserved the victory!

Game 4 was against Samba Pele and we knew by then (from our stats lady Jeanie!) that we couldn’t make the quarter finals. Back to 7-a-side, we went with 3 midfielders and Luke the lone striker. Samba were the group winners and I cannot remember the ball being in our half for more than 30 seconds. The front 4 of Luke, Sam, Kian and Alex were an attacking force of immense quality. They drove forward, passed beautifully and communicated well. They and Charlie and Milan, were never out of position. The game was won with a great hatrick from Luke. The final goal was created by a great run from Kian down the right side of their defence. His cross was perfect for Luke to score. A fantastic performance!!!

We had huge smiles at the end of the game, despite not qualifying for the next stage. The boys were enthusiastic in the post-match debrief and then marched off to the ice cream van for their well-earned cornets (with flakes and syrup!!!).

Well done boys.

Nick and Martin
