Under 9’s Buddy team v Bourne End (16 October 2011)

Squad; Robert Orr, Akshay, Aakash, George, Matthew, Andreas, Alex W, Kaushal and Charlie

This fixture was a ‘home’ game, but played at Flackwell Heath (who we buddy with). We took a squad of 9 players and played two 7-a-side matches. As with this strange Autumn the weather was nice and sunny!

Match 1

Alex started off in goal, with Robert and Akshay in defence. Aakash, Andreas and George were the midfield engine room with Matthew the lone striker. This line up gave us a solid base, with lots of energy in the middle of the park.

Right from the start we attacked, the midfielders supporting the excellent runs of Matthew. Akshay was very comfortable on the ball, with good distribution. Robert was awesome. He didn’t miss a tackle and always came away with the ball. The passing started to happen as the boys became more confident and shortly before halftime, Matthew broke away and slotted the ball into the back of the net. The boys ran back to the centre circle with huge smiles on their faces!

Throughout the remainder of the first half and the second half we continued to create chances, which on another day would have made the win even greater. Just one scare at the other end when Alex parried a hard shot and Akshay swept in to clear away the ball.

Match 2

This was probably our better game, but it finished in defeat. Again we attacked well and George put away a great finish just before half time to give us the lead. Unfortunately, the boys went to sleep at a corner a minute later and Bourne End equalised. This was probably a fair score at half time. Not long into the second half, we fell behind to a counter attack. Aakash (who replaced Alex is goal for the last half) stood no chance with a well taken shot beating him. We didn’t give up and had several efforts cleared away. Both Alex and George went close, as did a thunderbolt from Aakash.

As a coach I was tremendously proud of the way the boys played. They passed the ball as well as I’d seen a team do and only a couple of times did they lose position. There were stand out performances all over the park. Charlie was excellent with his dribbling and had two fierce shots well saved. Andreas was so strong going forward and showed great skill.

I’m grateful that we had a squad of 9 players. In every half we had several injuries. Aakash was very brave coming back on after being winded blocking a fierce shot. Charlie missed the last half of the match with a leg injury and Robert kept coming back on after getting several wounds.

Lastly, thanks for all the parents help on the day. It made my job much simplier. Special thanks to Ralph for refereeing, Martin for coaching and Steve for not losing any of the footballs!

Well done boys!
