We welcomed Chesham United to Westwood Park as our opponents for our first ever cup game. Chesham are in the middle division of the South Bucks Mini Soccer Conference and this was our first ever match against them.

Match 1
This was our first ever cup match so players and coaches were quite excited.

We started with a 3-2-1 formation which to me is a safe option especially when playing a cup game. We started well with Charles and Christopher controlling midfield and supplying Sam with some great through balls. Their goalkeeper had an outstanding first half making several good saves. Rishi was fantastic as centre back with Charlie and Milan supporting him well. Halfway through the game Charles took on a couple of players and drove a shot into the bottom corner of their goal.

In the second half players stayed in their positions as they were doing well. Matthew joined us in this second half and provided the team with with some surging runs and great tackles. Again the goalkeeper was Chesham’s star player making save after save. The opposition were playing well but did not get many chances on goal so Alex did not see much of the ball. It was not long before Charles and then Sam added to the score line. It was a good overall performance with the team playing good passing football and holding their positions.

Match 2
This second game proved to be a tough test for our team as from the onset this team were clearly the stronger of the two. Ever heard of a match of two halves? Well this was a day of two matches.

I am not sure if it was down to how well we played in the first game and thought we could easily do it again or some of the players were tired but we did not keep their positions, concentration lapsed and we conceded a couple of goals. This was an object lesson in the importance of keeping our positions during matches and maintaining our concentration levels throughout both matches.

In the second half Alex came out of goal and to go up front as striker and Rishi went in goal; we went with a 2-2-2 formation to get back in the match. Alex went on to score a great goal and Rishi pulled off a fantastic save. Charles drove the midfield in a lost cause as Chesham went on to score a couple of more goals.

Overall, the boys did ok but there are definitely things we need to work on in training.

Bottom Pitch
Luke, Kian, Aakash, Akshay, Chris M, Robert W, Guy, Aaron

Match 1
We started the first match very brightly, with Aakash and Akshay both settling into the match very well. Luke opened the scoring early on and we continued to dominate possession throughout the first half but their goalkeeper made several excellent saves to keep us at bay. Robert W played in the middle of a back 3 and followed our instructions to the letter, supporting attacks when he had the chance and marshalling his fellow defenders when required. The second half was much the same until the last 5 minutes; Robert capped a fine display with a good finish from close range and Aaron scored a well-deserved goal after a high energy performance. Chesham had the best of the last 5 minutes, creating several chances from corners and Christopher made one very good save from a shot heading low into the corner of the goal.

Match 2
This turned out to be the weaker of the two Chesham sides and we continued where we had left off in the first game but this time the goals came before half time. Aakash and Luke scored early on, Guy added a third and Luke scored again just before half time. Christopher came out of goal for the second half and scored a fine goal with a deft turn and flick of the ball before Luke, now playing at the back, came forward to complete his hat trick with a long range shot.

Overall, this was an excellent performance with all the players passing the ball well. Aakash ran at defenders, causing them problems all the time while also passing the ball when required; Robert W gave probably his best performance for the club; Akshay continued to prove what a good defender he can be; Kian, possibly our most improved player this season so far, was as tenacious as ever; Luke scored 4 goals and was very effective in the last half in defence; Aaron was excellent throughout, running at defenders and scoring a fine goal; Chris M showed great concentration, making a fine save after a long period without having much to do, and came out of goal to score in the second game and Guy capped another good game with his second goal for the club.

Well done everyone!

Ian and Wayne
