A rather misty and overcast morning greeted the boys for their first league match of the season. Previous matches against Holy Trinity Troopers had proved to be fairly close and following the hard knock received a few weeks ago in the Cup, the boys were keen to notch up their first win.

With a squad of 17, Paul was able to mix and match the players to give everyone a game.

The match kicked off promptly at 10.30 am with some good attacking play from WestwoodPark. This was matched by the home team who were first to get their shots on goal. Having shot wide of Ben’s goal, the home team notched up a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the match with a well worked 1-2 by their forwards and a well taken low shot under Ben. Unfortunately 2 minutes later a further strong attack by the Troopers and a cleverly taken long distance cross/shot took them to a 2-0 lead.

All credit to the boys as the WestwoodPark heads did not go down. 2 minutes later a well worked cross from the right ‘bobbled’ in front of the opposition’s goal. Frustration that no one got a foot to it was short lived as Ed Mundy hit the ball back across the front of the goal and Joseph Tunney turned on it well and placed it into the roof of the net taking the score back to 2-1. A few minutes later the Troopers were pressurising the Westwood goal and shot over the bar. Both Ryan King and David Jewsbury provided a strong defence. 5 minutes later on the stroke of 11 o’clock a good ball played into the opposition’s 6 yard box was cleared but only as far as Joseph who from 20 yards shot past the Trooper’s keeper to level the score at 2-2.

The boys by now had a good momentum and realised that they could win this game. 5 minutes later a long ball up the middle was run onto by Ed Mundy who ran around the keeper and put the ball in the back of the net to take a 3-2 advantage. 3 minutes later an excellent shot (goal of the season so far) by Joseph over the Troopers’ keeper extended the lead to 4-2.

A mention must be made of Magnus’s dad Adam who made a ‘schoolboy error’ in waiting until half time for his bacon roll. The mild weather saw a run on the rolls and baps at the café which left him with very little more than a coffee and a Twix!!

After half time both sides came out strongly and for the first 15 minutes there was end to end play and pressure on both goals. Rees played well up front but couldn’t get through the defence. An excellent save by Ben diving low to his left side kept the 2 goal advantage. Again, the Westwood defence, and this time, particular mention for Sam Kennion and David Thomas, was solid and kept the ball out of the net. The Troopers were a little unlucky not to score during the half with shots in the side netting, wide of the posts and over the cross bar not eventually troubling Ben. Continued strong play by WestwoodPark saw the game finish as a 4-2 win.

An excellent start to the league campaign and well done to all 17 players who played some good football and notched up a deserved win.
