This was our first league fixture against Haddenham Youth and all 4 games were pretty evenly matched. As it was Remberance Sunday we held a minute’s silence between matches which was impeccably observed by both team’s players.

Top Pitch
Squad; Joss, Joe, Luke Sutcliffe, Aaron, Luke Brown, Alex Walker, Kian & Chris Parsey

After a good warm up the boys were given their instructions. Joss and Joe were given the centre midfield roles in the two matches. This was new to both of them, but they went on to take on the role really well. A few minutes was given to a few corner routines, but they never materialised on the pitch! We set up with Nick’s favoured formation of 2-3-1, with one of the defenders pushing up to be a holding midfielder when we attacked. Players were tried in different positions and they were keen to take on the new roles.

Game 1
Alex W started the first half in goal and gave an assured performance. To be honest, not much got past us as the team really defended as a team. Our opponents were quite skillful, but the team ethic always meant that if the first player was beaten then a second player often made the vital tackle. Joe was the central midfield glue that allowed Kian, Luke S and Aaron to make some very good breaks. It wasn’t long before Kian got on the scoresheet with a cool finish.

Aaron went in goal in the second half with Alex W playing left midfield. Luke S pushed upfront. 1-0 soon became 2-0 with a well taken finish from Alex W (not sure about that Hernandez’s celebration though!). We then lost concentration for the only time in both matches and our opponents took a long goal kick and scored a lovely goal which Aaron nearly managed to keep out. This only served to keep our boys going and soon Luke was rewarded for several bursting runs by scoring our third and fourth goals. The scoreline didn’t really reflect the play. Their goalkeeper made enough saves for a whole tournament!
Game 2
Aaron continued in goal and did really well. His handling and distribution was excellent. Kian and Luke S were the defenders. Kian was very disciplined as Luke loves to attack. Joe was given orders to fill in for Luke S when he went forward, which worked extremely well.

Chris P has added some solid defending to his lovely left foot. He really bossed the left midfield and rarely allowed any of their attacks down that flank. On the right side of midfield was Luke B. Luke B has an engine on him that allows him to be attacking at one time and then race back and defend. His passing is also top drawer. Joss was in charge of the central midfield and Alex W/Luke S were awesome in attack.

Luke S scored a goal and could have had more as their keeper was again in good form. Luke S then supplied a goal for Alex W from a corner and then a cross to Luke B, who finished with a lovely volley. In between, we didn’t manage to clear a corner and conceded a goal from close range. I must mention Kian’s brave keeping at the end. Several times he dived into a melee of boots to grab the ball.

These two matches are the best we’ve seen our boys play. The passing was sensational. One move had 6 boys passing the ball and nearly resulted in a goal. The boys showed that you can beat a player with a pass. In fact, we passed our opponents off the pitch. Everyone held their positions. Joe and Joss were fab in the central midfield role. They were hardly ever dragged out of position. It’s hard to fault the boys after two awesome wins. Just need to work on the corner kicks now!

Nick & Wayne

Bottom Pitch
Squad: Charles, Sam, Charlie, Guy, Arjan, Aakash, Akshay, Robert W, Archie

Game 1
We played in 1 3-2-1 formation, with a central defender given licence to get upfield whenever we were attacking, while making sure that he got back to defend when required. Robert W in particular plays this position very effectively, but Akshay also shows great promise in this area. This was a close game with goals from Robert W, a close range finish after a typically effective burst upfield from the back, and Archie, who finished really coolly with a left foot shot across their keeper which went in off the far post being matched by two fine finishes from Haddenham.

Game 2
We continued with our 3-2-1 formation and were soon attacking, with Sam showing what a good player he can be. He was strong going forward and looked to pass the ball wide when required. Charles was full of energy as usual in midfield and he added two goals to a fine all round performance. Guy completed our scoring; he is proving himself to be a natural striker but looks comfortable in midfield as well. Haddenham scored two good goals, one from their no.12 who posed us several problems with his direct running at our defenders. Arjan and Akshay were very solid in defence, Aakash continued to impress in midfield, but also performed his defensive duties when asked. Archie dribbled the ball well and ran tirelessly for the team and scored a really good goal. The buddy team’s game had been cancelled and so Charlie was available as a second sub and tackled well in midfield and defence as well as making several good passes; he was very patient as, being a late addition to the squad, he had less time on the pitch than the other players.

Overall, this was the best we have played for a long time and certainly this season. Our passing at times was fantastic, our finishing very good and when required, our goalkeepers made fine saves,

Well done everyone!
