Who would have thought that we would have such drama on a wind swept pitch under the flight path of the Booker Aerodrome!

This team beat us 14-3 in the cup competition only a few Saturdays ago. We were up against the same opposition on the same pitch and we were fielding the same team albeit without our top scorer! Yet there was an air of determination to give it our best shot.

The home crowd was the largest of the season (well done parents!) and whilst Corals were giving 300-1 against Westwood to win this match, who knew what the next 60 minutes would hold!

From the kick-off the first 10 minutes were primarily played in the opposition’s half with Westwood providing strong challenges and real pressure on the Cougars’ goal. After 4 minutes Ed Mundy even hit the post and Sam Kennion shot wide. The opposition were rattled. Excellent football was played by WestwoodPark and continued pressure on the opposition’s goal saw shots from both Magnus and Sam shooting close but not quite being on target. When the opposition did break, Ryan and Patrick were solid at the back as was Rohan who played a pivotal role in defence.

Continued determined play by Greens saw WestwoodPark take a 1-0 lead from Magnus. A goal that was well deserved.

3 minutes later another attack by WestwoodPark resulted in a ball on the edge of the box being shot by Arun wide of the keeper to notch up a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars countered with a number of strong attacks but excellent positioning by Joe in goal and good movement off his line thwarted any serious challenge to the score line.

Half time came and a 2-0 lead was extremely satisfactory.

Paul started the second half with a change of players but from the start there was real determination and further attacks on the Cougars’ goal. After only 3 minutes both Edward Eaton-Hart and Edward Mundy shot at goal and Edward Mundy put in a rebound to take the lead to 3-0. With the opposition becoming more frustrated, the WestwoodPark forwards played an excellent move to allow Arjan to knock the ball firmly into the net for a 4-0 lead.

Within minutes the Cougars’ strong No. 9 shot firmly past Joe to take the score line to 4-1. 2 minutes later a further attack by their No. 9 (who scored 9 goals against us only a few weeks ago!) came to nothing as Joe came off his line extremely competently and forced him to shoot wide.

20 minutes into the second half, Oliver Collier took a great shot from the left side over their keeper to notch up a 5-1 lead. 4 minutes later a further attack by the forwards allowed Edward Mundy to run around the keeper and make a left foot shot to notch up his second goal and take the score line to 6-1. The Cougars’ attacks continued with their strong No. 9 hitting the post and subsequently shooting firmly past Joe to notch up his second goal of the afternoon.

The match finished with an extremely impressive 6-2 score line.

During the post match interview, the team’s manager, Paul Tunney, confirmed that “this was the best he had seen his players play this season and hopefully they can replicate this throughout the rest of their games”. A most enjoyable and satisfying morning’s football for all 17 boys and the large ‘home’ crowd.

Every boy gave 110%!

We just need to do it again next Saturday, the opposition being the Oakridge Baptist Cougars yet again!
