Top Pitch

Squad: Aaron, Kian, Alex Walker, Chris Parsey, Luke Brown, Rishi, Sam & Archie

The best bit about this fixture was that we all turned up really early! The football side of things was not so great. Of the two pitches that the home team provided, we had by far the worst one. It sloped a lot from side to side.

Usually, we have the tendency to start slowly. Unfortunately, the slow start lasted for one and half games. To be fair, we were up against a strong team and the pitch was heavy underfoot making running and passing difficult. Our opponents had one exceptional player who seemed impossible to stop.

The first game was over in a flash. We never really got going and lost it 6-0. The second game started in a similar vein and at half time we were 3-0 down. To their credit the boys finally responded. We had our first shots on goal and linked well in midfield creating some good chances that their goalie did well to keep out. We had Rishi and Luke B playing through injuries and Aaron off the field after saving the ball with his face! A great save, but a nasty bruise the next day. Alex W and Sam drove themselves into the ground trying to find a goal. Rishi and Luke B were a strong force down the right side, with a few nice passing interchanges. Unfortunately, the game finished 3-0, but we left the field feeling a lot happier. It’s just a shame that the boys took so long to get going.

I hope the boys have learnt something from these games. They certainly showed the good and the bad sides of Under 9’s football!

Bottom Pitch

Squad: Luke S, Robert W, Charles, Aakash, Akshay, Joe, Guy, Chris M

We started the first match well and raced into a 3-0 lead by half time, with Luke and Charles driving the team forward. Robert joined the attack where possible and was rewarded with a goal to add to Luke’s two well-taken finishes. The second haslf was scoreless as Prestwood came back into the game, although Charles took some serious punishment as the tackles rained in on him.

The second match was a different story against the better of the two Prestwood sides. This time it was Prestwood who raced into the lead with three similar goals; their star player ran strongly through our midfield and at our defenders before hitting hard shots which Chris in goal had no chance of saving. At half time, we asked the boys simply to concentrate on passing the ball as well as they had done in the first game and aim to win or draw the second half. A goal from Chris M, after Luke had hit the bar for the second or third time, was just reward for the team’s efforts and the final 4-1 scoreline was a little flattering to the opposition. One of their players had an exceptional day, scoring 9 of the 12 goals we conceded over the 4 matches and this was very much the difference result-wise between the two teams. However, we played the better passing football throughout and if we can add some more determined tackling to the skill and effort we showed, we will concede fewer goals.
