On a bright but cold Sunday morning we travelled to Flackwell Heath for a “home” fixture against Hughenden Valley. We had a strong squad after 5 cry-offs from the original selection. As this is likely to be our last U9 Blue fixture of the season, we rotated all the players as much as possible so no player had more than 2 halves in the same position and we agreed to play 8-a-side to keep all the players playing due to the cold wind.

Match 1
Joss started in goal with Aakash, Akshay and Gabriel in defence, Milan, Guy and Lucas in midfield with Matthew starting up front. The first match was very even for the first few minutes but despite playing uphill, we gradually got on top, scoring two goals. Guy, after a great run the full length of the pitch, struck a low shot into the far corner and Gabriel followed this with a goal of his own to put us 2-0 up at half time. For the second half, we changed nearly every position; Aakash took over in goal, Milan and Gabriel joined Akshay in defence, Lucas went up front with Guy, Joss and Matthew now forming the midfield. We continued to impress, playing some lovely fluent football. Aakash was very tidy in goal when required while Guy and Joss made several incisive runs into their half. Matthew had several half chances to score and was a bit unlucky to either find the wrong side of the post or their keeper blocking his shots. Hughenden had a half chance or two but we remained solid in defence and could have added to our tally late on. Overall, a fine performance and a good win.

Match 2
We rang the changes again; Milan starting in goal behind Guy, Lucas and Joss in defence, Aakash, Matthew and Gabriel in midfield with Akshay playing striker. It looked as though this might have been a mistake when Hughenden scored a great individual goal after only 15 seconds; perhaps we were caught a bit cold in the new positions. However, to the boys’ great credit, they weren’t fazed by the early set back; if anything it spurred them on and they were soon making strong tackles on their star player, passing the ball really well and creating chances. Ian was referee so the sideline coaching was left to the parents and what a fine job they did, encouraging the boys and coming up with a new formation of two defenders and five forwards! It certainly seemed to work as we equalised within 5 minutes and then the flood gates opened; we seemed to score with every attack for the rest of the half, turning round at 5-1. For the second half Akshay played in goal and we gave Matthew a chance in defence alongside Joss and Milan, Guy and Gabriel secured the midfield and we played twin strikers, Lucas and Aakash. Our first goal in the second half was slightly fortunate as a weak shot squeezed through the hands of their keeper but that was the only luck we needed as we added four further goals. Joss, Gabriel and Matthew all scored one each while Aakash and Akshay helped themselves to 3 goals apiece.

Well done boys on an excellent performance and thanks to the “coaching parents”; you know who you are!!

Ian
