This was our first visit to Pitstone & Ivinghoe as the weather beat all our many attempts to play the equivalent fixture last season.

Squad: Adam, Alex J, Andreas, Antonio, Arjan, Kaushal, Matthew, Will

We included two players making their league debuts for the club, Antonio and Will.

Match 1
We started very brightly against a strong P&I team; Kaushal in goal, with Arjan (1st half) and Antonio (2nd half) & Adam as defenders behind a midfield of Alex J, Will and Andreas, with Matthew as the forward. The first half ended 0-0 despite several chances at each end. Matthew was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions from half chances while Kaushal had to make 2 or 3 smart saves at the other end. The second half was equally even but P&I were quick on the break, sweeping past our midfield to score. The final result was 4-0 to P&I but this was not a true reflection of the balance of play. Kaushal was excellent in goal and had no chance with any of the goals, one of which was a great volley just under the bar. Arjan was as solid as ever with his easy and unfussy style of defending, despite playing with a leg injury alongside Adam in defence. Alex Jennings was excellent in centre midfield, driving forward and beating players to create several chances which we couldn’t quite finish off. Andreas worked up and down the wing tirelessly. Matthew’s work rate up front continues to be impressive and only some solid goalkeeping prevented him from scoring. Antonio took his chance in the second half to make several tackles and interceptions.

Match 2
This was a real end to end classic at the end of which I don’t think either manager knew the final score. Adam & Andreas took their turns as substitutes in this game, but we kept pretty much the same positions & formation as the first match. By the time we kicked off the rain was falling heavily and it is great credit to the players that they continued to play good football until the end. Once again we started brightly but went 1-0 down early on. The impressive thing with this group of players is that they do not let their heads go down if they go behind and were soon back on level terms with the first of 4 goals for Will. Playing mainly down the left hand side, Will was strong going forward, making several penetrative runs, setting up chances for Andreas, Matthew and Alex J before taking on the final defender himself and slotting the ball into the far corner. We worked a couple of good chances from short corners before Will scored again with a carbon copy of his first goal, Back came P&I to equalise before half time. Adam took over from Kaushal for the second half, making two excellent saves, with Antonio getting a chance to play as forward; Matthew moved into midfield with Arjan and Alex J in defence. Chances galore were still being created at both ends; Will completed his hat trick and added a fourth midway through the second half but P&I hit back with a third goal. We then scored number 5 to lead 5-3, Matthew getting the last touch after good battling work by Antonio. There was still time for P&I to score a fourth goal and for us to have a goal disallowed just before the end. Well done to Will on his 4 goals; he is a very strong player going forward and when he adds to the defensive side of his game he will be even better.

Overall the team played some excellent football, especially going forward and were rewarded with several good goals in the second game. With some strong opponents in this division to come, we will need to bolster our defensive game to try and reduce the number of chances we give the opposition to score and we will also need to work hard in training on our positioning, especially in defensive situations.

Well done to everyone on a fine performance.
