Squad: Kian, Charles, Alex Walker, Robert Worthington, Rishi, Chris Parsey, Wil and Alex Jennings

Our usual squad had a couple of additions in the form of Kian and Alex Jennings, as numbers were down for this fixture. Thanks to them for helping us out. It was a cold morning with players shivering throughout the warm up – we had to tell them to remove hats and gloves before kick off! Adam kindly came across to supplement the coaches and ref as well.

What followed was the old adage of ‘a game of two halves’. This was for both our matches today.

Match 1 Westwood Park 1 – 2 Penn & Tylers Green

Seldom have we played a team with so many tall players. I’m sure two of their players were nearly 6 foot! However, from the kick off we played the most fantastic flowing football. Wil had a long shot early on and a couple of great corners that had their defence scambling to clear their lines. Rishi was immense in defence and is really becoming a good passer of the ball. He laid on one excellent pass for Charles to run on to. Charles was everywhere, prompting our attacks and also putting in crucial blocks on the rare counter attack from our opponents. Near the end of the half, Kian escaped the last defender and hit a great shot past the keeper, only to see if come back off the post. To say we should have been 3-0 up at half time was an understatement.

So the second half started and straight away Charles struck in a lovely shot from the edge of the penalty area, which nestled in the corner of the goal. Then we eased off and let our opponents back in. A corner a few minutes later and the ball was bundled over the line by their 6 foot striker! We tried to fight back via a run from Charles who set up Wil, but his shot cleared the bar. Our opponents pressed on and Alex W was in the game. On one attack he made three saves to keep the ball out. The last save meant we had another corner to defend and again we defended poorly and went 2-1 down. There wasn’t much to report after that.

This was a game that for 60% of the time we deserved to win by a country mile.

Match 2 Westwood Park 1-2 Penn & Tylers Green

Paul did a great job of picking the boys up after that second half performance and we soon were on the attack. Chris P got on the end of good Charles cross and looked on in despair as his shot came back off the post. Robert then let fly with a shot which was well saved by their keeper. Alex J tackled like a demon and rarely let his opponent get the better of him. Unfortunately, our holding midfielder got caught out of position and a counter attack saw us go one down. That nearly became two when a shot destined for the top corner was palmed away by Alex W. What a save!!! This spurred us on and Chris P unleashed a strong shot on goal which the keeper couldn’t keep hold of. Both sets of parents informed the ref that it was a goal. A great effort by the parents there. So 1-1 at half time.

No sooner had we kicked off when a long range shot was deflected into the net by our defender. Alex W had no chance. That seemed to suck all the wind out of our sails. We were second to every ball and put no pressure on their players. Despite the best efforts of the coaches the players just didn’t get going. Alex W on the other hand had another excellent performance, making save after save (some from his own poor kick outs to their players I should point out!). He really kept the score as it was. Right at the end we nearly got an equaliser when Robert passed to Charles and he shot just wide.

Overall, we showed that we can be an excellent team, but also what happens when we lose our effort/commitment. Today we tried some players in positions that they are not used to and that gives a great insight into where they might play next season.

Paul, Adam and Nick
