Penn and Tylers Green FC vs. Westwood Park FC

Squad: Rob W, Akshay, Aakash, Archie, Kian, Chris, Milan, Alex W, Sam, Charles and Joe

On Sunday morning, our Westwood Park team arrived at the pitch and luckily the weather was on our side. After a half hour warm up, we kicked off at 10:30am with Akshay and Aakash as our subs.

The match started off fairly even with some fantastic attacking skills from Sam. About 10 minutes into the match, Penn and Tylers Green had an attempt on goal but with Kian and Charles working together in midfield, our defence was as strong as ever. Westwood Park managed to get the ball further up the pitch and an excellent header from Sam, just missed the target. A quick substitution was made with Joe coming off and Akshay taking his place. The match carried on fairly even with a few more attempts at goal from both teams. With half time drawing closer, Penn and Tylers Green opened the scoring with a fine shot; 0-1. Even though the boys were a bit disheartened, they still carried on playing really well. After their goal, P&TG continued to press forward but our defence stayed strong. Half time soon came and the coaches gave the boys a team talk.

The second half started fairly even but a few minutes in, a goal was scored by P&TG, another fierce shot from outside the area. Twice we failed to press the ball in central midfield and twice we were punished. We were rolling our subs trying to get a breakthrough but when we did create chances, the P&TG ‘keeper was in excellent form to deny Archie, Sam, Kian and Charles. We were playing well now but P&TG always looked dangerous going forward and with 15 minutes remaining scored again, 0-3. We kept plugging away and seemed to improve as the game went on but a corner after a quick break gave their substitute a tap in at the far post. Alex W then made a tremendously save from a low shot but we were now playing the better football and with 5 minutes left, Archie scored from a short pass from Sam but was just offside and didn’t count. We did finally score though a couple of minutes later; Sam beating their ‘keeper to a cross to head a fine goal; 1-4. We had time for a couple more attacks but the whistle soon blew for full time without any further addition to the score.

Even though Westwood Park didn’t win, this was a really good game and although P&TG deserved the win, we created several chances to score and the scoreline could easily have been much narrower.

Well done to all the boys; with a bit more belief against a strong side and a bit more luck in front of goal the result could easily have been different.
