U11 v Prestwood, Sunday 8th December

This was the return match from the first game of the season back in September. After several cry-offs, we were down to 10 players and Rishi had to depart without starting due to an injury suffered the previous day. However, the starting 9 players were determined to put on a good show.

Team: Alex W; Guy, Milan, Chris P; Akshay, Charles, Sam, Archie; Luke

The first half was fairly even although we had the better chances overall. Luke scored direct from a corner after 10 minutes and we had a couple of other half chances, mainly from Luke’s right wing crosses to Archie coming off the other wing at the far post and from the third of these, Archie finished well; 2-0. Prestwood were creating chances of their own with incisive passes through the middle of our defence but a combination of Milan’s defensive skills and Alex being very sharp off his line prevented them scoring. Prestwood then had a good spell, Alex making several fine saves before Prestwood finally scored. Another though ball reached Alex on the edge of the box, their striker into Alex and the ball; the ball broke to one of their players who tapped into the empty net. It was harsh on Alex who very bravely reached the ball first and was injured in the process. However, our two goal lead was soon restored when with 5 minutes to go to half time, Luke added his second and our third with a cross shot from the right into the far corner of the net.

Half time: 3-1.

The second half was similar to the first; our attacks were more patient, with Sam and Charles solid in central midfield, while Prestwood played longer balls over our defence and it was Prestwood who scored next; 3-2 and still 12 minutes remaining. Prestwood hit the cross bar twice and looked like they might score again. We were under more pressure when Chris P took a ball straight in the face and had to leave the field with a severe nosebleed which took 10 minutes to stem. We played on bravely with only 8 players and this was probably our best spell of possession football. Indeed, with 5 minutes remaining, Luke broke clear on the right and crossed for Archie to hit the ball high into the roof of the net. 4-2. Chris bravely returned for the last couple of minutes and we held on for the win.

Well done to all the boys, especially Alex and Chris who continued playing despite their injuries. We have had two close games against Prestwood this season and both games could have gone either way. This has been the story of our season so far, with 3 defeats by the odd goal.

Regards,
Ian
