10.30 start in glorious sunshine, long may it continue! Won the toss and elected to play downhill in the first half. Westwood made a lively start, using the width of the pitch and linking play between defence and attack. Looks like all the passing drills are paying off. Some good early pressure and a couple of corners. Craig was particularly lively on the left wing and there was some superb running from Ed Murphy off the ball but the return pass was not always forthcoming. Something more to work on in training.

Westwood continued to press and a lovely through ball from Craig found Fergus in space, great control and shot… 12 mins in we are 1:0 up.

13 mins in 2:0 up. Goal mouth scramble and ball cleared to Magnus who lifted it over the keeper and into the net.

With Westwood finding lots of openings and pressing the opposition back we had three more corners before a great save on 20mins from the opposition keeper just kept out a rasping shot from Ollie Ellis.

With Westwood continuing to press forward the opposition broke for a quick counter attack, Ryan came out to clear but a superb looping shot from the opposition no.9 brought the score back to 2.1. 1st goal conceded this season and I doubt we will see many better.

With renewed confidence Eagles pushed for a second goal. A superb save from Ryan denied them on 35 mins before late in the half Saavan had a shot saved and then cleared off the line.

Second Half

Westwood struggled with the change of slope and 2 minutes after the restart were undone by another swift counter and the ball chipped into the net… 2:2. Some of our early fluidity and passing had faltered, maybe with the mass change of players and maybe heads dropped and we stopped talking to each other. Either way the defence were suddenly much busier and some "firm" tackles were being made to keep things level. Ben was a rock at centre back, unfortunately one of the opposition found themselves between a rock and a hard place for our first yellow card of the season. Thankfully they were ok and able to continue.

On 60 mins after a scrappy period of play with neither side able to break through we gave away another free kick on the edge of the area. Floated in, 6 yard bagatelle and 3:2 down

The last 20 minutes of play we made a few chances and with 5 minutes to go thought that we might get one back. Sadly it wasn’t to be.

A delighted Eagles got their first win of the season and the first win against Westwood Park for 3 seasons.

Good attitude from the players and lots of commitment, need to maintain communication, pressing the ball and defending from the front.
