St James Eagles 4-2 Westwood United U17s (Craig, Ben)

This match was “déjà vu all over again”. On a cold morning on a bumpy dry pitch Westwood kicked downhill and dominated from the start. Good work from Fergus and Magnus led to Craig’s controlled close range finish to make it 1-0 and shortly after a classic Ben long free kick was fumbled by the keeper into the net for 2-0. It was looking good and Craig rattled the bar (pictured)with a great, dipping long range strike before Ben crashed another shot against the woodwork and Magnus shot narrowly wide. Half time, in control, what could possibly go wrong……

Kicking uphill Arjan shot just over at the start of the 2nd half. It was a turning point, as 3 freak goals turned the game on its head. A grass cutter of a free kick, a fortunate rebound off the post and a desperate mix up at the back saw Westwood 3-2 down. The game was turning increasingly feisty as Amman and Magnus added to Craig’s first half booking, but the guys showed spirit and kept pressing. Ollie and Arjan went close before St James made it 4-2 following a loss of possession in midfield.

Whilst a great disappointment after the first half efforts there were strong performances, in particular from Will and Alex, whilst Ben tried at all times to drive the team forward. The league is a step too far now, but it was good to get some game time after almost 3 months away and the Cup is still up for grabs!
