Westwood lose to Iver: all to play for in the cup next week!

St Peter Iver Lionhearts 4 -0 Westwood Park United U17s

On a glorious hazy Saturday morning it was time again to battle with our arch rival’s St Peters Iver Lionhearts who at our last match only just got the better of us with a one goal win back in November.

The game started off fairly balanced, the first opportunity came after 15 mins when Iver missed the net going just wide, a near miss but a wakeup call for Westwood. The first 30 mins saw Westwood trying to push forwards with neat passes and good control although at times a lapse in concentration that gave Iver a number of chances to get ahead. A well taken Iver corner 35 mins into the game was saved superbly by Ryan along with great defending by Aman and Ben.

Not so lucky 5 mins later from another Iver corner saw the ball go into the net after a goal mouth scramble. With a goal down Westwood needed to focus, regroup and try to level the score before half time. Westwood almost pulled one back minutes later with Alex sending the ball just over the bar and then minutes later Arjan’s controlled pass to Ollie E went close but blocked by a solid Iver defence. If Westwood were going to score in the second half they needed to communicate, concentrate and reorganise. Iver had dominated the first half and were certainly not looking to take prisoners.

Westwood gave away a corner early into the second half but skilfully saved by Ryan, but 5 minutes later Iver put a second goal into the net from the edge of the box. Then minutes later an Iver free kick from long range was knocked out by Ryan only for Iver to header it back into the net, 3 goals down. Westwood looked disheartened but fought on and the closest opportunity came in the 30th min of the second half when Alex’s skilful cross from outside the box to Arjan almost resulted in a goal, but goes over.

Ten minutes before the final whistle Westwood gave away another free kick 25 yards from the box, a well taken shot by Iver hitting the back of the net making the final score 4 – 0.
Iver played a great game, with more energy, constantly counter attacking and keeping Westwood’s defence and goalie busy and preventing Westwood advancing forwards by constantly closing Westwood down.

Westwood never gave up, their overall performance was good, but we always knew Iver was going to be a challenging match. All the players gave it their best but plenty of work still to do.
An important cup game next week at home, again with St Peters Iver. If we can remain focused and concentrate throughout and not let Iver frustrate us, then we can and will have a winning chance!
