Ten man Westwood walk tall and nearly pull off our best result of the season
Westwood United U17s 1-2 St Peters Iver Lionhearts

This Cup semi final saw the 3rd meeting of the year between these highly competitive sides. Westwood were lacking some key players due to late injury call offs, which meant they had the bare 11 at kick off.

Kicking uphill (downhill is usually worth a 2 goal lead) in the first half was always going to be a test and after an even opening Westwood fell behind; however they battled hard and an outstanding cross from Craig was bundled in by Ollie E to take the wind out of the boisterous St Peter’s players and supporters.

The team were playing with spirit, working hard, with Dan excelling in midfield, closing down energetically and picking off quality passes.

At halftime the always dangerous Fergus had to leave, meaning we were down to 10 against the league’s top team. The 2nd half was tight. Ollie E had a chance and Craig fired wide from range. The boys worked really hard, Ollie C putting in a great shift on the right and the defence of Alex, Ben, Aman and Ed keeping them at bay. Ryan’s handling was also back to his assured best.

It looked destined for extra time when, with 2 minutes to go, Westwood failed to clear a corner and Iver scored to their unconfined delight and relief. It was harsh on the boys who pressed to the end.

This was a fantastic effort against a quality team with Westwood resources stretched to the limit. Ten men walked tall! They should be proud.
