A Game of 2 Halves

This second meeting of the 2 Westwood Park teams was played in good spirit and saw huge fluctuations in momentum. Gary took a great call that the match should go ahead. Having cleared the excess water off the pitch Rangers started strongly, hitting the bar, before United broke away and Fergus showed good strength to break clear and place his shot into the corner.

It was a false dawn. Rangers, organised and showing good skill, came back with a vengeance. A long range strike eluded Ben, keeping for the first time since October and it was game on! A second long range shot and a neat header from a corner meant Rangers were 3-1 up at half time. United were off the pace, slow to challenge, wasteful in possession.

Colin’s inspired half time words [Colin:
err… words of desperation?] changed the match on his head. Kicking up hill United played with control, passing with thought and defending with passion.

Magnus’ great through ball saw Fergus pull one back. The momentum had changed and Ollie "right place right time" Ellis equalised from Fergus’ pinpoint cross. Whilst not one way traffic United sized the initiative, the midfield of Arjan, Craig, Magnus and Will were dictating more and a deflected free kick saw Fergus claim his hat trick. Fergus added 2 further goals and missed a penalty due to an outstanding save. Ollie Ellis also struck a superb curling shot just over.

It was a fantastic comeback, against a good team. Ben performed with increasing confidence in goal and Dan filled in well at centre back, whilst Aman, Jonny and Ed held firm.

With a couple of big games still to come, it’s good to see boys re-finding their form.
