Our U11 Colts team playing in the Yellow Division of the South Bucks league, have won their league cup final.

The final was played at Thame football ground and we were designated the home team. 10 minutes before the match we were taken into the home dressing room to give our final team talk before kickoff. Then the boys made their way into the tunnel before being lead out onto the pitch where each player had their name called out over the announcement system.

The first ten minutes was a nervy affair with Wendover starting the brighter team. Wendover packed the middle of the park and this allowed them to pick up all the 50/50 balls as we struggled to get into the game. The boys slowly built themselves into it but we still came under threat from the large Wendover centre forward as they looked to release him early. Samuel, Jasper and Srijith worked hard to neutralise this but Wendover looked the more threatening with a shot which came of our post after 12 minutes. As the game went on we began to look more dangerous with Patrick making a run down the left to win us a corner which he delivered perfectly into the box, but we failed to get a runner on the end of it. Wendover countered quickly and again put us under pressure at the back, forcing Leo into a fine reaction save, but he wasn’t quite able to keep hold of the ball which left us with hearts in our mouths as it looked to be rolling over the line but he recovered quickly to keep hold of the ball. It was about six minutes from half time when we were finally undone when Wendover caught us on the break and lashed one home to go ahead.

At half time we explained to the boys that they had to be patient and to keep working hard. We asked Charlie to take responsibility for their striker to try and minimise his impact from the long ball goal kicks. He did this superbly during the second half sitting a little deeper during the attacks and quickly picking him up during the transitions. This turned the tide of the game in our favour as Wendover looked to struggle without a target player to aim at. As Wendover began to tire we began to look like the better team with our passing game getting into full swing. Chris managed to get on the end of a loose ball and saw his lobbed effort go narrowly over the crossbar. Patrick also had a good effort on the left forcing the keeper to tip it over the bar. We were just beginning to think about making changes when Yuvva-Raj snatched an equaliser keeping his cool to slot one home, so for the last 10 minutes we held our nerve and kept with the formation. The boys kept the pressure on Wendover and another opportunity came when, under pressure from a goal kick they passed back to their goalkeeper who picked it up and conceded a free kick for a back pass. It was indirect and so Patrick rolled to the ball to Chris whose shot went just over the crossbar. Minutes from time Yuvva-Raj pressed a ball out from the back and Charlie cleaned up the loose ball and played it into the middle. It came back out to Zac who found himself in enough space to have a go and smashed it into the bottom corner to take us up 2 – 1 only minutes from time. For the last few minutes the boys held their composure to see out the game.

Well done boys on becoming the Yellow Division Cup winners. A fantastic end to a great season for the Colts.
