Saturday, 9th November 2013 Risborough Rangers Colts v Westwood Park Colts

Westwood Park arrived in Princes Risborough nice and early and after a half an hour warm up, all the players including the coaches took to the pitch for a minute silence for Remembrance weekend.

The match started at 10:00am and we had a big squad of 11 players. The first subs were Elijah and Alex L.

We were soon into our stride and passed the ball well, with Gabriel and Charlie running the centre of midfield. Aaron, playing on the left of midfield, saw plenty of the ball in the first 15 minutes and was unlucky not to score with several shots, cutting in from the left side onto his right foot; their ‘keeper kept him out with a series of fine saves. Robert O was a constant threat down the right flank, beating the Risborough left back and delivering some dangerous crosses. From one of these, Matthew poked the ball home after a good save from their ‘keeper. Risborough had a very lively striker who, when they had spells of possession, was a constant threat and Antonio, Milan and Arjan had to be alert to the danger he posed. However, Kaushal had little to do in the first 30 minutes. HT: 1-0 to Westwood Park.

Risborough came out strongly in the second half and had a couple of chances. Elijah had replaced Kaushal in goal and soon had to be sharp off his line to prevent a shot on goal. We continued to build attacks however and Aaron, Matthew and Robert were linking together really well. From one attack, Robert crossed the ball along the 6 yard line and Aaron was more alert than the defenders and had a simple tap in at the far post. 2-0. This prompted Risborough into a couple of counter attacks and they pulled a goal back with a fine finish after a quick break. They were probably the better side for the next 5 minutes or so and had a couple of half chances to equalise before we made the game safe; Aaron scoring his second goal, 3-1.

This was a good performance by the team in cold wet conditions. At times we passed the ball really well and Aaron and Robert in particular were a constant threat down the flanks. Matthew showed some nice touches up front, bringing other players into the play really well, and Alex L worked hard as well as a lone striker in the second half. Gabriel, Charlie (and Kaushal in the second half) linked well in midfield and the defenders, Antonio, Arjan (and Elijah in the first half) were very well marshalled by Milan at centre back.

The main difference this season from last year is that we are scoring goals; last season we averaged only just over a goal a game whereas this season so far we have scored as many goals as the whole of last year, averaging 4 per match.

Well done boys on a good win.

Sunday 10th November; Red division v Flackwell Heath (A)

Sunday, 10th November 2013 Westwood Park vs Flackwell Heath

Westwood Park arrived at Flackwell Heath nice and early with the sun shining brightly. After a half an hour warm up, all the players including the coaches took to the pitch for a minute silence for Remembrance Day.

The match started at 10:00am and we had a big squad of 13 players; our first subs were Rishi, Sachin, Kian and Joe. The match started off quite even and Westwood Park tried to pass the ball but keeping possession was difficult against a good Flackwell Heath side. Just minutes into the match, Flackwell Heath had the first of many attempts on goal but it was cleared by our goalie, Alex W. Although our boys were strong in defence, Flackwell Heath continued to make chances and opened the scoring on 8 minutes, 1-0. After this setback, our boys stepped up their game but Flackwell continued to put us under pressure. Luke and Guy were replaced midway through the half, Kian and Sachin, playing his first game of the season after a long injury lay off, taking their places. Akshay was holding our defence together, making incisive tackles and covering well. Westwood Park had a rare attack; Sam’s shot well saved by their goalkeeper. Half way through the first half, Flackwell Heath scored with a great shot from outside the box dipping just under the bar, 2-0. Our boys’ confidence dropped a bit but they carried on defending strongly and gradually worked their way back into the match. By now possession was more 50:50 and Charles very nearly scored, missing by millimetres! Archie was replaced by Rishi, another of our team playing his first match of the season, and one good run behind their defence put him through on goal but he was flagged just offside. Half time soon came soon after and the score was 2-0 to Flackwell Heath.

The second half started well for Westwood Park and our boys were finally at the top of their game. Our subs for the start of the second half were Luke, Chris, Guy and Archie. A couple of minutes into the half Rishi came off with Luke taking his place. We were now making chances and this was our best spell of the game. Charles, Sam and Kian were starting to get a bit more possession in midfield and when Archie rejoined the game we had our best attacking moments. Despite having the best of the possession at , we conceded another goal against the run of play despite Alex W’s amazing effort to save it. We were obviously a little disheartened but we continued to attack and had several shots on goal without getting the breakthrough but after another quick break Flackwell Heath scored again, 4-0 to Flackwell Heath. We refused to give up and built more attacks and from one of those attacks, Luke’s shot from outside the box brought a fantastic save from their ‘keeper. From the resulting corner, we kept pressing and a cross from the right found Luke who slotted home into the far corner, 4-1. This gave us a bit more confidence and we had chances to score, before another lightning break brought Flackwell Heath their 5th goal. Charles, Chris, Luke and Sam soon came off the pitch with Sachin, Joe, Robert and Sam taking their places. The whistle blew for full time and the score ended up as 5-1 to Flackwell Heath.

The boys played well at times but too often we were short of players in midfield, allowing Flackwell plenty of possession. However, even when we were 4-0 down we continued to battle and had a good 15 minute spell which produced a goal and we could have had 2 or 3 more but for good saves from their ‘keeper. The key area the boys need to work on is still their first touch and passing; too often an easy short pass is overlooked for a longer and less accurate option. More application is required in this area at training.

Sunday 29th September 2013 Westwood Park vs. Wendover

Squad: Alex W, Aakash, Akshay, Kian, Robert, Sam, Charles, Luke, Christopher P, Milan, Archie and Guy

Coaches: Adam and Nick

Westwood Park team all arrived nice and early for a quick warm up. They were looking to keep their 100% record they had so far this season. A quick team talk given to the boys by Adam and they took their positions to start their 2nd game of the season with Milan, Archie and Guy as subs. From the start, Wendover looked very strong in the attacking front, however our boys’ defence kept them away from the goal. As Wendover kept on challenging our defence, they eventually got through, with a wonderful strike from their lead striker but Alex Walker made a great save to keep the sides still at 0-0. Throughout the first half we had some amazing tackling from Kian and great saves from Alex. The game was fairly even with both sides attacking but still they couldn’t find the other team’s net.

Wendover had another chance to score but good defending from Akshay and Robert prevented a goal. We were now under pressure and only more great saves from Alex kept the score at 0-0. Charles, Chris and Kian were replaced by Archie, Milan and Guy. Wendover were still on top but our boys defended well. In a rare attack, we got a free kick; Luke whipped in a cross and Akshay nearly scored but just missed by millimetres! Luke was replaced by Chris and even though our defence were doing a great job, Wendover scored a deflected goal which left Alex with no chance; 0-1. There was 30 seconds left of the first half and our boys were on the attack when their keeper kicked the ball down the field to find his striker, who was clear on goal. The striker chipped the ball over Alex; 0-2 and half time.

Adam and Nick gave our boys a half time talk and the encouragement that they needed. They made a few changes with Sam, Guy and Robert as subs for the first part of the second half. The second half started and our boys received plenty of opportunities to score but unfortunately they weren’t at the top of their game and couldn’t score. Wendover then took a chance and scored another great goal with an overhead kick. The score was now 3-0 and our boys were feeling a bit disheartened but this only made them fight harder for a win. Unfortunately, Luke had an injury and was taken off alongside Aakash and Chris with Sam, Rob and Guy taking their places. Our boys worked hard to find an opening but Wendover now defended well. With Chris and Luke back on, we continued to press. Soon after, Westwood Park got a free kick and Charles stepped up to take it. He crossed into the box for Archie to head home; 1-3. The goal gave our boys a bit of hope and they carried on playing really well. Shortly after, there was a hand ball from the Wendover left back and a penalty was given to Westwood Park. Luke stepped up to take it and scored low to the keeper’s left; 2-3 and one minute to play. The boys were still playing really well but there wasn’t enough time to score another goal. The game ended with a score of Wendover 3-2 Westwood Park.

The boys played well at times and were stronger as the game went on but overall it was probably a fair result. Even though we didn’t win, the boys can be proud of their second half performance.

Coaches: Paul, Adam and Nick

A Special Report from our Chief Football Correspondent, Meera Patel.

This was our first game of the season and we took a squad of 12 players to Prestwood for a Red division match. With a quick warm up and a team talk from the coaches, we were ready to play. Starting off with Aakash, Chris and Joe as subs and Alex in goal, the other boys took their positions.

The game started and Prestwood FC showed good attacking skills but our boys held firm and fought back twice as hard. They worked well as a team and this gave them more confidence. We had some wonderful tackles from Kian and some good defence from Charles. About half way through the first half, Sam nearly scored from a good cross from Archie. Charles was replaced by and the boys carried on playing well and soon after, they earned a free kick. Luke stepped up to take it and hit a tremendousshot to score our first goal of the season! Time was ticking away in the first half and Sam was replaced by Chriswho got stuck into the game straight away and shortly after, did a fantastic volley but unfortunately missed the goal. . Half time was drawing closer and even with Milan’s amazing defending, Prestwood scored. The score was now 1-1 and the whistle blew for half time.

Adam and Paul gave a half time talk to our players and made some changes for the second half with Archie, Milan and Alex as subs and Christopher in goal. Our boys were eager to get back on the pitch anda few minutes into the second half, we had an attempted goal from Sam but Prestwood’s defense was solid. Soon after, Prestwood scored their second goal of the match. Our boys still held their heads high and started to fight back. Luke, Kian and Robert were replacedby Alex, Archie and Milan. We were close to scoring twice with Aakash and Archie just missing the goal by millimeters. Half way through the second half, Alex, Sam and Joe were replaced by Luke, Kian and Chris. With 7 minutes left the boys earned themselves a penalty. Kian stepped up to take it but unfortunately missed. The boy’s spirits rose though, as Luke scored in the last 5 minutes. The score was now 2-2 and our boys fought for a win. There were 20 seconds left of the game and just as we thought it was going to end as a draw, Robert scored from Luke’s corner making the score 3-2 to Westwood Park! The game soon finished and everyone was ecstatic with our victory – especially Jeanie who finished with a little jig on the pitch!

Well done to all the boys, who really enjoyed themselves and were all really pleased to win the first game of the season!

Fantastic start for Under 11s !!!!!!

Match Result: Westwood Park FC U11s 1 St James Saints 0

Squad: Baffoe, Lee, Haxell, Hughes, Smith, English, Baverstock, Bailey, Murray, Browne, Forster, Dover, Bierrum

It was a fantastic start for the WPFC Under 11s in their first ever 11-a-side game at Westwood Park this morning and the highest ever number of players turning out at this age group (much to the coaches relief).

St James were a tall and physically strong side and had the majority of the early play but the WPFC defence was rock solid, Louis not being troubled too often in goal but doing everything well with some excellent drop kicks and goal kicks. There were great performances from; Ethan marshalling the defence, Max having a fantastic first game for the club, Aaron (Lee)doing an excellent job and James doing an excellent impression of Ashley Cole on the left.

Our midfield started to get control of the game; Joshua as ever never stopping running, Guy getting some excellent passes away, and two of our other new starters Andrew and Daniel playing as if they had been with us forever.

Up front, once they started getting some service Adam and Aaron were causing lots of problems for the St James defence.

Our 2 subs; Toby and Ewan played an excellent part in the game with some great tackling and passing from Toby in particular.

In terms of the game, our winner came from a penalty from Aaron (Browne) after a blatant handball by the St James defender, Aaron tucking away the penalty brilliantly. We had 2 further ‘goals’ disallowed (rightly) after an accidental handball across the line by Adam and a healthy use of the arm by one of our forwards.

Whilst St James had their chances it was mostly our clearer chances but it was definitely heart attack time in the last few minutes as St James came close a couple of times.

So, a fantastic start, well done to all the players and thank you also Tom for his excellent refereeing and to the parents who kindly helped out with the nets and corner flags.

Bring on the next one!!!!!
