U7s v Holmer Green (home) Sunday 25th April 2010

Holmer Green are a strong club with over 30 registered players and brought 22 with them on Sunday, so we expected tough, close games. We had 15 players, including new addition Adam Barnett, so played 7 a side on the bottom pitch and 8 a side on the top pitch.

Top Pitch

Match 1

The first game started really well with everyone really enjoying themselves. Robert and Sam playing up front soon took charge and made some good breaks with Aaron, kaushal and Andreas giving some good support. Charlie and Christopher took up defence and were very strong together. We kept the pressure up and with the ball in our goal area a break was on. Christopher made a little pass to Sam who then dribbled and made a long pass over the heads of the everyone to find Robert who had positioned himself in lots of space to go on and score a great goal. Adam was in goal for the first half and did really well picking the ball up everytime. Andreas went in goal for the second half did really well especially kicking the ball out to his teammates.

Match 2
The second game was just as exciting. There was a moment when the ball was in our goal mouth for an eternity and even the parents were gasping, we eventually cleared and managed to get a break. Christopher went in goal and did some amazingly long goal kicks which helped the forwards make breaks. Sam had a great run from midfield and his shot was only saved with some great goalkeeping from their side. Adam really got stuck in and showed great enthusiasm on the ball. Aaron got away from a tangled group and then showed just how fast he can be on his own running all the way and nearly scoring. Charlie was great in defence and dribbled the ball with control rather than just kicking it out. Kaushal made some great runs down the wing, we had most possession and were just unlucky to let a goal in at the end.

Overall they played fantastically well, especially against the second team who were very strong. We noticed how they are shouting for the ball when they knew they are in space and good positions to push up field. Well done boys.

Squad: Robert, Aaron, Sam, Charlie, Kaushal, Andreas, Christopher, Adam

Bottom Pitch

Match 1
The first match was a much closer affair than the score line suggested. In the first half a couple of speculative shots skidded into the corner of our net and if Alex hadn’t made an excellent save at the end of the half we could have been further behind. We had our chances in the first half; good efforts from Luke, Charles and Alfie went unrewarded as Holmer Green defended well, blocking everything they could. In the second half we left ourselves a little exposed as we pushed forward for goals, leaving Arjan in goal with little cover and Holmer Green added another couple of goals. Good games from Lucas and Alfie who covered lots of ground in defence and midfield.

Match 2
The second match started with a bang and Luke and Charles scored a goal each in the first 2 minutes. Luke and Charles worked together very well, causing the Holmer Green defence all sorts of problems. Holmer Green than started to play a bit, and scored before half time. Kian and Alfie showed some great touches in midfield, both playing with increasing confidence. Alex showed what a good passer of the ball he is in matches and once again showed an eye for defensive positioning. The second half was pretty even; Luke scored again before Holmer Green pulled one back from an unlucky own goal to set up a rousing finish. Arjan was the stand out player in defence, hassling the opposition, making his tackles and holding his position really well. Kian was assured as usual in goal in the second half, with clean handling and a blinding full length save to prevent a Holmer Green equaliser.

Well done to all the boys, especially Kian who we didn’t realise until after the game was playing despite a leg injury.

Squad: Luke, Charles, Alfie, Arjan, Kian, Alex Walker, Lucas

U7s v Marlow Youth (away); Saturday 17th April 2010

20/04/2010 at 10:14 am | Posted in Match Reports, Under 7s | Leave a comment

This was our penultimate fixture of the U7 season, rearranged from January 10th. We played Marlow Youth at home in December and had 4 very close matches so we were looking forward to another tough fixture.

Pitch 1

Match 1
After a delayed kick off due to late arrivals, both teams played good football despite the small bumpy pitch. Luke scored an early goal but the game was very even. Marlow’s best player scored 2 quick goals and when a third followed and with only a few minutes left we looked a beaten side. However the boys didn’t give up and kept battling before 2 late goals from Luke rewarded our efforts. Rishi was tidy in goal in the first half before Alex J took over for the second half. Robert was strong in the tackle and Sam made his usual mazy runs. Charlie and Jacob were solid in defence as usual.

Match 2
The second match was also a tough game. Marlow scored early on and added further goals throughout the game, while we struggled to convert our chances. We were not helped when Luke was taken off half way through the first half and we played the rest of the game with only 6 players, 2 of whom were already struggling. In the circumstances, the boys did very well to keep the score down. Robert gave a master class display in goal in the second half; a credit to his Dad’s Saturday morning training sessions! Sam, Rishi and Jake never stopped running forward and then back to defend.

Luke, Sam, Charlie, Alex J, Robert, Rishi, Jake

Pitch 2

Match 1

Alex Walker was the goalkeeper in the first half. He produced a series of excellent saves, including one destined for the top corner. This doesn’t mean it was one-sided. We had a succession of chances to score as well, so it was a surprise that no goals were scored. Marlow dominated the second half as injuries to Aaron and Alfie affected our attacking options. Kian in goal made some good saves, but couldn’t stop a string of clinical finishes. We to their credit kept their heads held high and continued to try and get back into the game.

Match 2

Alfie’s injury meant that he spent the entire second game in goal. He performed well and has developed an enormous goal kick! I don’t think Lucas missed a tackle and Christian was everywhere. Charles showed some good touches and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions. Aaron worked hard in the midfield, but struggled with his injured ankle. We continued to try and pass the ball as much as possible. Alex and Charles combined well on the left wing (despite both being right footed!) with our best move of the game. Unfortunately, We could not get a goal and Marlow continued to be clinical in front of goal.

The two scorelines did not reflect the effort and energy Westwood put in. We were proud that they kept going until the end.

Squad: Alex (GK match 1 – first half), Kian (GK match 1 – second half), Charles, Christian, Aaron, Lucas and Alfie (GK match 2)

U7s v GX & Fulmer 28/03/10

29/03/2010 at 6:29 pm | Posted in Match Reports, Under 7s | Leave a comment

For the fourth time this season we were up against GX & Fulmer. This fixture was originally scheduled for Westwood Park, but as we had played the same opposition at home last week (and GX do excellent bacon rolls) we switched the fixture to an away match.

Pitch 1
Match 1
Both teams carried on from last week with an excellent game of football between 2 well matched sides. An even first half ended as GX & Fulmer scored with the last kick of the half but only after both teams had good chances to score. Matthew led from the front with several strong runs past their defence and with a bit more luck might have scored. Both Alex’s (Walker and Willox) were very energetic in both defence and midfield, while Joe made lots of tackles. With Charles moving forward with purpose at every opportunity we had 2 or 3 other chances to score. The half ended deep into injury time when one of their players ran through our defence and beat Luke with a strong shot into the corner.

The second half was more of the same and our pressure eventually paid off with a fine goal from Charles from Luke’s quick throw in; a fine reward for Charles’ non stop running and tackling. Also, Alex Willox made a fine stop from a one on one with their striker.

Match 2
Alex Walker had picked up a leg injury in the first match so played the whole of this game in goal making several important stops, especially as we came under intense pressure in the second half. This was another hard fought but evenly matched game. We had slightly the better of the first half, with Joe, Kaushal and Lucas getting stuck in to try and win the ball. Luke scored with a left foot cross shot before half time. After half time, the pressure was mainly from GX as they laid seige to our goal looking for an equaliser. We played with 3 defenders in this half and several times goalmouth scrambles ended with one of our players getting in the way. During the second half on a rare foray into the GX half Charles produced the best skill of the match with a run and tricky turn which almost produced another goal.

Squad: Charles, Alex Walker (Gk match 2), Alex Willox (Gk match 1), Lucas, Matthew, Joe, Kaushal, Luke (Gk match 1)

Pitch 2

All the boys played well again on the day and really enjoyed both games.

The first game started fast with GX getting an early goal, but they picked themselves up and it wasn’t long before Robert received a pass through their defence and scored a goal with a really powerful shot. Charlie and Alex J were in defence and did a great job holding the line but soon had to be split up due to the chatting on the field! GX scored again but only made the boys more determined and again a lovely pass from Aaron released Kian to make a long run with Robert supporting on his left. Without help Kian went all the way to score a great goal well placed away from the Goalie.

Game two was a much better game for the Westwood boys. They really enjoyed this one and played together as a team. Archie was in goal and made some great saves. He took some huge goal kicks which undoubtly helped the team get the ball into the oppositions half. Arjan made some great tackles and managed to clear the ball down the line. Charlie was on form and made some great runs down the wing. We kept the pressure on and Sam managed a long run round the players to get a shot into the top left of the goal. Aaron made some exciting runs and nearly scored a number of times. There were numerous goal scoring chances made from some long throw ins and excellent passing. All in all the boys got it together for this game with lots of fun as well

Squad: Robert, Aaron, Sam, Charlie, Arjan, Alfie, Archie, Kian, Alex J

U7s v Gerrards Cross & Fulmer 21st March 2010

Top Pitch – Match 1

Having trained in the rain the previous day, it was great to see sunshine again. The first match was a really even encounter. Robert scored a lovely goal early on. Westwood Park decided to keep players in their original formation for both games so Alex went in goal for this match.

Jacob and Christopher were non stop tacklers. Charlie seemed to be everywhere!

Both goalies weren’t too troubled as both teams tackled hard and most of the game was spent in the middle third of the pitch. There was some goalmouth action, but Westwood Park held out until the last minute of the second half, when a deflected shot trickled in.

Strong performances from all the players particularly Charlie. No one got past him.

Top Pitch – Match 2

Probably a step up for Westwood in this game. Their opponents passed the ball well and one player particularly showed almost Messi like dribbling. Nevertheless, Westwood had their moments and Sam worked tirelessly covering almost every blade of grass on the pitch. Lucas had his first start in goal and produced some fine stops. Arjan made some very important interceptions. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Westwood could not breach their opponents defence. A couple of late counter-attacks produced goals for their opponents, but Westwood never gave up trying. Their commitment was excellent.

Alex and Robert played very well.

Squad; Alex (GK game 1), Lucas (GK game 2), Sam, Charlie, Jacob, Arjan, Christopher and Robert

Nick & Martin

Bottom pitch – Match 1

The first match of our third fixture this season against GX & Fulmer was another close affair although 3 goals from Luke in the first 5 minutes and a further 2 from Charles flattered us a little. Gerrards Cross passed the ball really well and were unlucky not to be rewarded with more goals. Matthew had little to do in the first half but Luke, in goal for the second half, was kept much busier. We also played good football, with some good passing particularly from Kaushal and Matthew. Kian and Aaron ran well with the ball and Joe made his usual number of tackles.

Bottom pitch – Match 2

The second game was as close as the first. Again the GX team passed the ball very well and only excellent defending from Alfie, Joe, Luke and Kaushal in particular and very tidy goalkeeping by Charles and Aaron prevented them from scoring. Alfie was everywhere in the second game, breaking up attacks and moving forward with purpose. Kian once again got stuck in with several good runs and tackles. Luke scored in the second half before GX put us under pressure right to the end from several corners.

Squad: Charles (Gk game 2), Matthew (Gk game 1), Joe, Alfie, Luke (Gk game 1), Kian, Kaushal and Aaron (Gk game 2)

Westwood Park U7 v Flackwell Heath U7, Sunday 7th March 2010

Match 1

A lovely day for football. A nice firm pitch and two good teams. Despite good pressure from both sides, no one managed to score. The opposition had the bulk of the attacks, but Alex and Robert made some good saves and Luke somehow managed to clear a certain goal off the line! Tough tackling from Joe and Arjan kept our opponents at bay.

Match 2

This was a goal fest with Luke scoring two very good goals and Sam showing what a clinical finisher he has become. Rishi and Joe did well in goal. Both sides pressed forward really well, without losing their shape. It’s always tough for defenders to hold their positions on cold days like this!

Overall the boys played very well in both games and kept going until the end despite not having the option of bringing on a sub. Luke and Robert played especially well.

Squad; Luke, Alex Walker, Sam, Rishi, Robert, Arjan and Joe
