U8s v AFC Lightning Sunday 16th January 2011

Despite heavy pitches and quite a severe slope across the pitch, our boys played really well against an opponent that they had never played before in the league.

Match 1
Luke and Alex had a half each in goal. Both were very secure in goal in what proved to be a very tight game. Lucas and Joe shared the defensive duties and kept a very tight ship. Robert really grew into the game and was tough in the tackle. Charlie enjoyed his first start as a lone striker. He made some good runs and held his position well. It really makes a difference if you can keep at least one player up field. Alex and Luke (when not in goal) showed great energy, matching the surging runs from Aaron. In a tight match, Luke finished a good move to plant the ball in the top corner of the net.

Match 3
Joe and Aaron were the respective keepers (or at least that was the coaches plan!). Half way through the first half, our opponents unleashed a cracking shot, which was destined for the top corner, only to see Joe stake a claim for save of the season!!! Unfortunately, Joe got injured on the next attack and Aaron saw out the remainder of the first half. Kaushal was keen to have a turn between the sticks, so he took over the gloves for the second half. The second half continued where we left off in the first half. The time we
have spent in training working on passing routines came to fruition. We really put on a display. Luke got himself a hat trick, with some fantastic finishing, but the goal of the game came from Aaron. His shot from outside the box flew past their goalie. Just one lapse at the back, shortly after one of our goals gave Kaushal no chance. In terms of energy (and skill), Alex was superb. He drives forward from midfield (and defence!) and has an amazing turn of pace.

Overall, it was really pleasing to see the boys play so well after a couple of months without a competitve match. They held position well and responded to instructions without a fuss. Several players tried out positions which you could say were quite alien to them (outside their comfort zone), particularly Lucas, Charlie and Kaushal.

Squad: Aaron, Luke, Alex Walker, Joe Henderson, Lucas, Robert Orr, Charlie
and Kaushal

Well done boys. Keep it up!

Match 2
Charles went in goal first with Gabriel and Jacob in defence Robert, Matthew and Christopher midfield and Rishi forward. Two players went down and we were unlucky to have a penalty awarded against us right at the start. The boys regrouped and did well to keep going forward for a while. Gabriel worked really hard winning the ball in defence, and clearing to his midfielders. Unluckily two goals went past us. Even so Gabriel and Jacob were having their best match with some great tackles. The second half Sam came on and Charles joined him in midfield. The game was much tighter and the boys upped their game using both wings with some lovely runs. Charles made a little run through the middle and passed to Robert who sidefooted a great goal.

The second game got off to a great start, with players releasing the ball a bit earlier as they’d been told. The passing was much better with Sam, Robert and Charles holding the ball in the opponent’s half. Charles made a great run down the left wing and almost got his cross in where Sam and Robert were waiting in space and unmarked. The goal kick was to the half way line, Sam made his tackle, played the ball up with a pass to Robert who placed the ball nicely for his second goal of the day. Gabriel was still tackling, winning the ball and feeding the forwards. The smile on his face said it all. Christopher’s defending was solid as usual. They all listened about not holding the ball too long and there was much more passing. A great game against good quality opposition.

Squad: Sam, Robert Worthington, Rishi, Lucas, Gabriel, Jacob, Charles, Christopher

Well done boys

Match 2

Robert went in goal for the whole of the first match and was very secure with his handling. He also has a very long goal kick! Charlie and Jacob were in defence. Both tackled well and it was good to see them taking up the correct positions at goal kicks and corners (and I thought they weren’t listening to us at the pre match brief!). Archie loves to use his close control in tight areas and he showed his skills off again. Sam scored an early goal. After that it was end to end really. Both defences were under pressure, but Westwood held out until just before the end when our opponents scored from the only time our boys were found to be out of position.

Match 4

The second game saw Archie go in goal. To be honest, he wasn’t really needed. From the kick off, Westwood were totally on top. Andreas played in central midfield and was fierce in the tackle and worked hard to close down their players. Joe was sublime in defence. He reads the game so well and constantly makes timely interceptions. Nicholas and Alfie bossed the wide areas and kept driving us forward. The game was totally played in their half. Robert got a goal early on, followed by a brace from Sam. Sam’s second was scored from their kick off. He intercepted the ball early and beat nearly their whole team!

Overall, two very good performances. Still some work to do on looking up and picking out a pass, but it keeps the coaches employed on a Saturday morning!

Squad; Sam, Charlie, Jacob, Nicholas, Archie, Robert, Andreas, Joe Henderson and Alfie

U8 v Marlow United (away) 17th October 2010

We travelled to Marlow for the second time this season for our third fixture of the season. We kicked off over 20 minutes late, which gave the coaches a little extra time to practise thrown ins with the boys and they picked this up really well. Goal kicks will be the next session!

Pitch 1:
The first match was definitely a game of 2 halves; Marlow attacked almost incessantly for the first half and scored a couple of goals from set pieces. For the first goal, our defensive shape for their corner was good, but one of our players ignored the coaches pleas to mark a player on the edge of our box, who duly had a free shot at goal from which they scored. Just before half time Marlow’s constant attacks were rewarded when a free kick deflected a couple of times before reaching the net. In the second half we were a different team. Luke, Archie and Toby, making his debut, ran the game from midfield; Toby in particular tackling hard and passing the ball

well, while Luke scored 2 good goals. Sam made several excellent runs but couldn’t find an end product. Lucas held his defensive position well and made tackles when required while Rishi, his defensive partner, was excellent throughout.

The second game was also a close affair. Luke scored a great goal, hitting the top corner from near half way, although there was some confusion as the half time whistle blew from the adjacent pitch and some of the players thought it was half time. Second half, Marlow put us under considerable pressure, forcing many corners, but our defensive organisation was better than the first game and Archie made a couple of fine stops. Alfie was much improved in the second game, making tackles and driving forward effectively while Kian got better as the game went on, pressing their players and trying to relieve the pressure on our goal.

Squad: Alfie, Archie, Kian, Lucas, Luke, Rishi, Sam, Toby

Pitch 2:
This match was very evenly contested. Aaron and Matthew took turns in goal. Unfortunately, the only goal of the game came from a goal kick that barely got out of our box. The attacker scored from a tight angle. Westwood responded really well and were soon given a penalty. Charles hit a lovely shot that somehow rebounded off the keeper’s legs. Lots of chances after that for both sides with Aaron and Charles going close. Alex was steadfast in defence and pushed up on one attack to deliver a beautiful volley, only to see the goal keeper pull off another great save. Joe held his position well on the left side of midfield, which gave us great balance and Daniel (on his debut) gave a tremendous display in central midfield. His cross country running has given him a great engine and he held his central midfield position throughout the match. Matthew continues to be one of our natural strikers. On numerous occasions he managed to work himself into space but we just couldn’t find the killer pass.

For the second match Alex and Charles shared the goal keeping duties. Both were excellent in goal. Alex made one outstanding save, which the ref was keen to remind him of after the game! As a team we struggled a bit in this match with key players either in goal or on the bench (Daniel). Two goals in each half gave an unfair scoreline, as Charles, Aaron and Alex all had chances to score. The opposition goal keeper was probably the best player in their team! Arjan and Christopher were solid defenders, always looking to release our midfielders with a well timed pass. Aaron loves to take on players and beat them with his drop of the shoulder. This game was no exception; he also covered well for our defenders when they were dragged out of position. Overall the boys played well as a team and deserved slightly better results than they got.

Squad; Aaron, Alex Walker, Arjan, Charles, Matthew, Joe Day, Daniel and Christopher

U8s v Flackwell Heath, Sunday 3rd October 2010

Pitch 1:

Two 7-a-side matches for our squad of 11 players; probably too many to give meaningful game time for the players and any continuity on the pitch. However, we acquitted ourselves very well; we are in the top division of the league and as the Sky commentators never tire of telling us “there are no easy games at this level”.

The first game was a tight affair and could have gone either way. However, we couldn’t take our chances and we gave the opposition 2 or 3 good opportunities simply through a slight lack of defensive organisation; something to work on over the coming season.

The second game followed very much the same pattern but the many chances created on both sides resulted in goals galore. Jude scored the first goal (hopefully of many judging by his excellent all round performance) on his Westwood Park debut. Luke weighed in with 3 goals, including a fantastic strike on the volley (and managed to help the opposition out with an own goal!).

Rishi, Charles, Aaron and Joe H played in goal and all did their job very effectively. The pleasing thing is that they are showing they can retain their concentration even when they are not kept too busy. Jude settled in very quickly and looked very effective despite this being his first game. Christopher continued to show that he can be a very good passer of the ball on his day, Matthew once again proved that he can get all over the pitch but also that he might be most effective in a more forward role and Gabriel and Andreas tackled gamely. Joe H and Rishi were most effective in defensive positions while Luke, Charles and Aaron love to run at, and beat, defenders; their enthusiasm in this area produced 4 very good goals. Joe Day continues to settle into the team and I’m sure will continue to improve in the forthcoming fixtures.

Squad: Luke, Charles, Aaron, Joe Day, Joe Henderson, Gabriel, Jude, Christopher, Andreas, Rishi and Matthew

Pitch 2

Squad – Alex Walker, Arjan, Robert Worthington, Robert Orr, Sam, Adam, Lucas, Alfie, Nick and Archie

We had a large squad to contend with for these two matches of 7-a-side. The subs were told to stay under the umbrellas and keep warm!

Game 1 was against a very strong Flackwell Heath team. They had a couple of very clever players. Despite this we managed to take an early lead, with Nick marking his debut with a great solo goal, cooling reversing the ball past the diving keeper from a tight angle. The goal sparked both teams into life and chances went at both ends. Arjan and Robert O were terrific in the tackle and Sam never stopped driving forward from his central midfield role. However, Flackwell Heath were soon back in the game with a long range free kick which gave Alex W no chance to save. A further goal was scored before half time. Robert W replaced Alex W in goal and to their credit the boys kept going forward, but a couple of super late goals gave a rather unfair look to the final score.

Game 2 saw Nick and Adam have a half each in goal. Both kept well. Adam made one fantastic stop from their striker to prevent a certain goal. Alfie and Lucas were constantly looking for a pass to release Robert W, who came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. The match turned on two somewhat identical goals from Archie. Both were shots from Alex W that the keeper could only parry out, Archie making no mistake with the rebounds.

The boys played off the back of the two goals and became more confident as the match went on. Nick and Archie were outstanding in both matches.

Overall, a very satisfactory fixture. We don’t focus on results at U8 level; rather we try and look past pure results and analyse the quality of the performances – what went well and areas we need to work on, both defensively and when we are attacking.

Well done boys!

U8s v Marlow Youth, 19th September

22/09/2010 at 11:23 pm | Posted in Match Reports, Under 8s | Leave a comment

Pitch 1
For the first match we had a very enthusiastic team with Kian and Matthew sharing goalkeeping duties, Alex J and Joe in defence, Aaron and Charlie in midfield and Charles up front. There were some great runs down the wings from Charles and some skilful passing around from Charlie and Aaron keeping the ball in the opponent’s half for most of the match. Our defence was solid and Joe made some great tackles, Alex J was always there to feed the ball up front. After the game Matthew said he had nothing to do in goal.

The second match we had Kian again in goal for one half and swapped team positions. Matthew was really strong and got himself into great positions with Charles and Aaron still bringing the ball down both touchlines. We scored a goal in the first half from a throw in and then were really unlucky to concede a goal from a penalty. Aaron had a great chance when he struck for goal and rebounded straight back to him to have another go. Charlie had a lovely shot which just went over the bar. Joe went in goal and immediately made a great save; Charles made yet another run and got the ball to Matthew in the in the six yard box where he completed three circles in controlling the ball and finally shot just wide. We were unlucky to concede a goal at the end especially as we had 70 percent of the play over the match.

Well done boys
Martin and Wayne

Pitch 2
Squad: Luke, Alex Walker, Joe Day, Robert Orr, Robert Worthington, Arjan, Adam

Debuts: Joe Day and Robert Orr

The first game was close, but we created more chances. Adam started in goal with Arjan and Alex W in defence; Joe Day, Luke and Robert Orr were the midfield, supporting Robert Worthington in attack. A fine cross shot finish from Luke opened the scoring in the first half after both teams had created half chances. Luke replaced Adam in goal, confidently using the whole area to block Marlow attacks before launching a long clearance to Alex W, now playing in a more advanced role, who calmly stroked the ball home for a second goal. Just before the goal, Marlow had missed a penalty.

The second game saw Robert W and Alex W share goalkeeping duties with debutants Joe D and Robert O in defence. Marlow scored a good goal in the first half after a couple of fine saves by Robert W. We had our chances but went into the second half a goal down. Increasingly frantic efforts to equalise meant our play became a little fragmented and only an excellent diving save from Alex W prevented a further home side score.

Overall, a very good first fixture of the season with plenty of good signs for the season ahead. Robert Orr was a revelation on his debut, showing strength and determination in the tackle and passing the ball well in midfield. There was some fine goalkeeping from Adam, Luke, Alex W and Robert W; all of them keeping their concentration during periods when we had good possession. Excellent goals from Luke and Alex W rewarded the midfield efforts of Joe, Robert W and Adam while Robert O and Arjan held firm at the back.
